Senior Applications Engineer

OVERVIEW: Senior-level Applications Engineer team members work closely with teams of Engineers, Assembly Technicians, and Customers at all levels of a client’s organization. This position uses fundamental engineering knowledge, including specialized knowledge about Pratt Miller’s technologies, to support the development of prototype and concept projects and their use by customers in the field. This position requires the ability to understand the needs of our customers and typical uses of Pratt Miller’s solutions, in addition to understanding the mechanical and electronic systems developed for the project. The candidate may mentor junior engineers and will competently execute the work in a professional manner to ensure that Pratt Miller is known for providing world-class service along with our world-class solutions and products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide knowledge of Pratt Miller solutions in order to support customers, both remotely and in the field.
  • Support products in the field that may include updates to mechanical or electronic systems and software.
  • Translate customers’ needs into potential improvements to the platform, by presenting information to the design teams about customer usage and interaction.
  • Inform customers about the use of the products through formal or informal training, including maintaining user documentation that may include service and maintenance manuals.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and principles
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to perform in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Perform engineering analysis and read engineering drawings and specifications
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve in a logical, methodical manner.
  • Customer interaction experience
  • Experience with vehicle systems and sub-systems
  • Familiarity with Vector CAN tools
  • Mechatronic systems experience
  • Electrical and hybrid vehicle systems experience
  • Ability to interface with multiple departments to accomplish tasks
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage his/her own workload to achieve deadlines
  • Ability to use common power tools, hand tools, multi-meters etc. to service products and troubleshoot problems.

DESIRED SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • High-Voltage system experience
  • Autonomous & by-wire systems experience
  • MATLAB, Simulink and Stateflow experience
  • Communication protocols: CAN, LIN, Wireless 802.11, ethernet, etc
  • CAD tools

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • 6+ years of Engineering experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is often performed in a variety of work environments including a typical interior office environment, shop environment, customer worksite, and outdoor test facilities.
  • Work around Pratt Miller products may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, loud noises, chemicals, high voltage systems, and heavy equipment / machinery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to travel with and maneuver a travel kit weighing ~40 lbs.
  • Ability to perform diagnostic and troubleshooting activities along with basic repairs on vehicles in a variety of work environments: workshops, outdoor test facilities, etc.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • Flexible working hours
  • 40-45 hours per week with occasional overtime required
  • Frequent travel may be required

This position will require lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information and employees in this role will need to meet those requirements. Requirements include US Citizenship, US Permanent Resident or ability to meet licensure requirements.
