Performance Engineer

PURPOSE:  The Performance Engineer (PE) assists the Race Engineer (RE) in optimization of car and driver performance.  This is done using a variety of data sources through detailed analysis, applying engineering fundamentals, and logical reasoning.  The PE has primary responsibility for fuel calculations during the race and assists the team with race strategy.  The PE will also perform a variety of R&D projects that fit with his/her skillset and background.  The PE travels to all races and tests that his/her assigned car attends and may also travel to other testing as necessary.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Race Engineer in thorough analysis and reporting on various sources of data
  • Create and use objective data evaluation methods for performance improvement and defining areas of development.
  • Interact with team drivers reviewing, interpreting, comparing data to maximize driver/vehicle potential and increase overall performance
  • Utilize vehicle simulation programs as applied to vehicle performance including lap time prediction, correlation methodologies, performance metric generation, tire data analysis, and modern set-up methodologies/studies
  • Support the race engineers and team staff in race strategy preparation and execution
  • Utilize programming skills and knowledge to improve and automate data analysis, reporting, and engineering operations
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and efficiency in analysis and reporting is a must
  • Extensive travel (>50%), including team tests, races, and other events as needed by RLL and its partners
  • There will be periods of long hours

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Required

  • Bachelors in applicable engineering field (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Computer)
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in professional motorsport with a focus on performance, data acquisition, vehicle simulation, testing, or design
  • Extensive experience analyzing race car data using Pi Toolbox, ATLAS, Motec i2, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of at least one high-level programming language such as Visual Basic, MATLAB, Python, C/C++
  • Attention to detail, organized, and able to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to handle pressure and deliver under tight time constraints

Preferred

  • Previous Performance Engineer experience
  • Experience building models for, correlating, and using lap time simulation to improve car setup and understand car behavior
  • Control systems operation and programming
  • Experience with Cosworth data loggers and controllers
  • Analysis and optimization of KERS type hybrid systems in racing environment
  • Working knowledge of CAD
