Simulation Engineering Intern

Simulation/Simulator Engineering Internship/Co-op

Hendrick Motorsports, a leading NASCAR Motorsports operation, is currently seeking a highly motivated engineering student for the Competition Systems Group. The ideal candidate is expected to have solid basic knowledge on vehicle dynamics, vehicle subsystems, simulation, tire performance, modeling, testing and deliverables. Also, the candidate will participate in the development and operation of a simulator. The development work for the simulator will include but it is not limited to audio, visual system, and software development. Other characteristics are to have the ability to work in a collaborative environment, developing and validating simulation software to improve overall vehicle performance on the track.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION(S):

Driving Simulator

  • Execute development projects to improve and enhance the functionality and performance of simulator
  • Support the development of the driving simulator from an operational perspective
  • Maintain simulator software and hardware where appropriate
  • Contribute to the operation and reliability of the simulator sessions including assisting with fault diagnosis and problem solving, sometimes under pressure
  • Working with drivers and/or engineers to improve performance through driving or setup and setting changes
  • Work withing the team to collectively develop the engineering capability and knowledge of the team
  • Record Driver comments for each run
  • Analyze data after each run, compare to track data or previous test data for correlation and effect of change
  • Create inputs for DiL with direction from teams, Post-Race, Pre-Race, Test Prep
  • Help validate new models / inputs such as aero maps and engine files

Race Team Support

  • Creation of basic tools to support race day activities
  • Assist with Pre and Post Event Reports
  • Support race day team activities

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: Required: Working towards an Engineering Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school). Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering (with Mechatronics experience) or a related degree preferred

Computer Skills: Knowledge of vehicle dynamics software and experience using simulation tools for dynamic systems investigation, implementation and verification are required (Simulink/MATLAB, ADAMS, Dymola, multibody simulation or similar software preferred). Data analysis software to analyze systems response (Pi Toolbox, Motec). Experience in the following programming languages C#, MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages. Proficient PC Skills, including but not limited to Excel, PowerPoint, and database management.

Preferred Specialized Knowledge and Skills: The ideal candidate understands how driving simulators such as iRacing and hardware in loop testing works. Experience on Real time Linux programming, mainly Red Hawk Linux experience would make a candidate very attractive.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Duration: 6-12 months
  • Work Schedule: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM M-F typical with some overtime and weekends possible. In occasions, travel on short notice may be required
