Engine Tuner

The engine tuner is responsible for the overall general maintenance of engines at the race track. Some of their responsibilities include inspecting and changing valve springs, inspecting and maintaining carburetors and/or throttle bodies, and the maintenance and stocking of engine components on the transporter. The tuner travels with the race team to all test and race events. While with the race team, the tuner is supporting all competitive activities related to the engine, including preparation for practice, qualifying and race.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for pre-travel ancillary system prep. Responsible for providing engine support for practice and race events. Tasks may include engine cool down procedures, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Responsible for checking and setting the engine timing; building, tuning, and adjusting the carburetor and/or throttle bodies; checking and adjusting the valve lash; installing and swapping intake manifolds.
  • Responsible for monitoring humidity and vapor pressure to set the timing of the engine.
  • Must maintain records documenting engine performance to track continuous performance and needed adjustments. Responsible for entering and uploading post event data and analyzing performance data as appropriate. Must communicate engine track related items to necessary parties.
  • Must be able to travel with little advance notice and adjust to abrupt scheduling changes.
  • Must have thorough understanding of a pushrod, carburetor and/or throttle bodies, V-8 gasoline internal combustion engine.
  • Must have well developed skills with hand tools, measurement tools including calipers, bore gauges, micrometers, etc.
  • May utilize engineering knowledge and skills to generate reports and analyze data, as needed.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required

Experience: 1 plus years of experience in racing, engine, or automotive field

Computer Skills: Basic Microsoft Office skills and knowledge. Must possess strong computer literacy to be able to learn and utilize various position related software.

Other Requirements: Working knowledge of basic mechanical skills and competencies required. Basic math, verbal, writing and reasoning skills required. Ability to travel extensively with little to no notice and adapt to abrupt scheduling changes. Strong communication skills are required in this position.
