Design Engineer

Founded in 1993, QA1 is an industry leader in performance shocks, suspension components, composite driveshafts, rod ends, spherical bearings and related accessories for the motorsports and industrial markets. QA1 has more than 100,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space in Lakeville, Minnesota. The state-of-the-art facility includes a complete line of CNC machines, hydraulic presses, filament winding and laser cutting equipment that permit all-inclusive shock absorber, suspension component and composite driveshaft manufacturing and assembly operations. QA1’s quality system is certified to the ISO 9001 standard.

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our team. Responsible for entire projects for the company, including but not limited to shock absorbers, vehicle suspensions, weldments, drivetrain, spherical bearings, rod end bearings, and ball joints by performing the following duties.

  • Use research, analytical, conceptual and planning skills, particularly mathematical modeling through the use of Solidworks to complete projects such as computer aided design models.
  • Provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and new products while considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety and time constraints.
  • Performs necessary calculations related to the design including but not limited to strength, fatigue, weight, cost, flow, and speed.
  • Producing details of specifications and outline designs through creating engineering drawings that specify materials specification, hardness, surface finishes and tolerances. and supports document control specialist.
  • Specifies welding and manufacturing processes when applicable
  • Manages projects using engineering principles and techniques.
  • Generates initial working bill of materials and implement in ERP software.
  • Participates in cross functional design review of projects.
  • Assists in constructing prototypes as needed and recommending modifications following prototype test results.
  • Conducts testing, validation of designs and evaluation of theoretical designs.
  • Participates in training events related to projects.
  • Generates release notes on projects.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from a four-year college or university; and two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software (Solidworks preferred)
  • Experience with word processing software, spreadsheet software, inventory software, Polyworks software, project management software and manufacturing software.
  • Experience with manual machines such as lathes or mills; welding tools including MIG and TIG; automotive mechanic equipment; shock dyno; and 3D scanning arm (FARO arm).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering tops, including but not limited to, strength of materials, fatigue behavior, weld joint interaction, fits and interferences, material behavior as well as print and bill of materials creation.
