General Summary:
This role will report to the Head of Controls and Systems or their designee and is located in Banbury, UK. Primary responsibilities include contributing to car performance through the development of control systems relating to mapping of the differential, brakes and throttle, and relating to the clutch torque control in race starts. This is multidisciplined role requiring good understanding of F1 SECU standard code, a good understanding of the mechanical workings of contemporary F1 transmissions (particularly the clutch and differential) and braking systems, and an understanding of the interaction of control systems with car balance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
- Work alongside the trackside controls engineers and performance engineers to make recommendations for differential, brake and throttle mapping settings based on car balance traits observed.
- Independently investigate novel mapping approaches/techniques within the SECU framework.
- Independently investigate novel steering wheel switch configurations to support more flexibility or additional functionality from mapping.
- Analyze practice and race start data to optimize torque controller settings and provide feedback of driver procedures.
- Gain an understanding of trackside controls engineer responsibilities to be able to provide stand-in cover at race and test events.
- Provide support to other engineering functions on matters relating to Controls.
- Develop tools for the simulation and analysis of differential/brake/throttle mapping.
- Work alongside development engineers on software feature requests, both for embedded software and VTAG.
- Work alongside development engineers on SECU file defaults (.dtv, .rlc, .clc, .vpx etc).
- Work alongside our power unit and transmission technical partner on matters relating to integration of power unit/transmission with performance controls such as differential performance vs target and clutch/power unit behaviour during starts.
- Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Controls and Systems or their designee.
Education and Work Experience:
- Degree or equivalent in automotive/mechanical/electrical engineering.
- Previous experience of working with control systems in Formula One/Formula E is essential.
- Previous experience of remote race support or trackside experience is desirable.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
- Excellent analytical skills relating to mathematics, physics and engineering mechanics.
- Strong technical background in racing car control systems.
- Able to work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations.
- Able to work well in a team environment with personnel at all levels.
Equipment and Applications:
- Solid knowledge and preferred experience in ATLAS 9/10, System Monitor, MATLAB, Simulink.
Work Environment Physical Demands:
An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role requires extensive worldwide travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
This position may require lifting up to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids.
