CFD Data Scientist

Purpose of the Role:   

The CFD Data Scientist will develop technologies to enhance McLaren's CFD process and analytics capability, delivering improved solutions to complex CFD problems for the Aerodynamics department. The role will include close collaboration with CFD R&D engineers and Software developers to integrate solutions that can leverage vast amounts of data to improve McLaren’s process and analytical capabilities. 

Role Dimensions:  

  • Part of the CFD Methodology team, reporting to the CFD Methodology Team Leader. 

  • This role is predominantly carried out within core hours, though some flexibility in working hours may be needed. 

  • This role is predominantly factory based. 

Key Relationships: 

  • HPC and CFD Methodology teams. 

  • Aerodynamicists. 

  • Software and applications team. 

Principal Accountabilities: 

  • Modelling: understand the behaviour of complex fluid dynamic systems through data driven modelling. 

  • Optimization of process, accuracy, predictive capabilities for complex CFD applications and workflows in collaboration with other members of the CFD R&D Team. 

  • AI Control: enacting recommendations through either closed-loop control or human-in-the-loop decision making. 

  • Explore new ways of using available CFD and HPC data to improve methodology, result analysis and process.  

  • Leverage collaborations with leading Universities and external partners to transfer and exploit cutting edge machine learning advancements into the McLaren Racing processes and technology. 

  • Keep a strong link with the Aerodynamic Development teams, CFD R&D Engineers and the Software development team to develop novel solutions for CFD in the Aerodynamic department. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • A post graduate level in Aeronautics dealing with CFD or numerical methods in combination with data driven approaches would be preferred. Alternatively, Mathematics, Computational science, Statistics or other relevant fields with exposure to CFD would be considered 

  • Knowledge & experience of relevant machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or others. 

  • Comfortable with working in Linux environment, shell scripting, Java, Python and C++ programming. 

  • Desirable: 

  • Experience in combining modelling and data-driven techniques for CFD. 

  • Knowledge & experience on CFD software development using high level programming languages. 

  • Knowledge of common CFD solvers (CCM+ / Fluent / OpenFoam).

  • Self-starter, able to identify requirements independently, then make proposals for solutions. 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical approach, with attention to detail. 

  • Good communication skills.
