About the Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Operations team for a Composite Manufacturing Engineer. The department is responsible for the manufacture of complex carbon fibre reinforced plastic structures such as the chassis, gearbox carrier, wings and engine components. In this role, you will lead the engineering activities within manufacture and support the development of manufacturing methods and processes. This role would suit candidates with at least 1-2 years’ experience in a relevant composite manufacturing position.

You will be responsible for developing composite manufacturing processes, procedures and tooling using technical experience and collaborative interaction with the team to improve quality, eliminate non-value-added steps and shorten lead times.

What will this role involve?

  • Positively contributing to focus areas within Operations, Health & Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost Reduction.

  • Be accountable for the technical aspects of the composite manufacturing continuous improvement plan.

  • Ensuring the cleanroom is provided with efficient ply kits and ply projection data.

  • Overseeing prototype and pilot builds, document the build process with standardised work instructions, develop shop aids and route cards.

  • Experience in writing process documentation or standard operating procedures is required.

  • Problem Solving; run root cause analysis to troubleshoot cleanroom manufacturing issues.

  • Leading technical capability projects in line with the development of our manufacturing strategy.

  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the developments within the composite industry and identify technology, equipment, processes that could increase the capability of the team.

To be successful you will have:

  • A degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • Knowledge of composite materials and manufacturing processes gained in Formula 1, Aerospace or similar industry.

  • Ability to use 3DX, CATIA V5 or similar CAD package for the interrogation of models.

  • Experience in laser ply projection is desirable.

  • Ability to interpret drawings, technical specifications, and product control documentation.

  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office. Knowledge of SAP desirable.

  • Able to produce project plans and manage small scale projects.

  • Understanding of RCCA principles including practical problem solving.

  • Experience in Design for Manufacture and Lean Manufacturing is desirable.

  • The ability to promote new methods/process equipment and evaluate special material requirements.

  • Hands on experience desirable, to resolve hand-lay process & cure bag improvements.

  • Autoclave experience would be desirable.

Candidate profile:

  • You will have a strong background in composite manufacturing.

  • Experience in other industries to challenge the way in which we operate as a Formula 1 team.

  • High motivation with good organizational and analytical/technical problem-solving skills.

  • Strong capability to work well in a team-based environment and promote teamwork.

  • Excellent organizational skills, capable of developing, maintaining, and reporting of development plans and status.

  • Technical writing skills to document and update any guidance or work instructions as well as engineering procedures and reports.

  • Flexibility to work outside of role as and when required to support team activities.

  • A well rounded and competent Engineer.
