Racing Propulsion - Senior Performance Engineer

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to [Pontiac, MI] three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role

We are seeking a Propulsion Performance Engineer to lead, coordinate, and support activities to help drive performance improvement decisions in engine and hybrid systems, as applicable. The individual will work closely with the Lead Propulsion, Calibration, Hardware Development, and vehicle Performance Engineers to analyze on and off-track data trends and convert these to performance, efficiency, drivability, and reliability improvements for our road racing programs.

Joining the Sports Car Propulsion Team will provide you with the opportunity to showcase and grow your skills through challenging individual and collaborative development activities – ultimately helping to shape the future of Motorsports.

What You’ll Do

  • Function as the point of contact for propulsion system performance projects

  • Partner with the Lead Propulsion Engineer to develop and prioritize a performance roadmap

  • Lead development of tools to help process and catalog analytical and physical propulsion system data

  • Leverage GM’s other race programs to grow analytical capabilities, driving common tools and methods where applicable

  • Collaborate with propulsion hardware, software, and calibration development engineers to help drive subsystem and system level performance gains

  • Assist Software Development Engineers in the creation and maintenance of HIL bench propulsion system plant models

  • Assist internal and external colleagues with DIL propulsion system development and modeling

  • Collaborate with key partners to extract and correlate dyno, track, and simulation-derived data to advance analytical model fidelity

  • Transfer knowledge across multiple race programs as appropriate

  • Lead or support program meetings with key internal and external partners

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) 

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science

  • 5+ years of engineering experience following the completion of a degree

  • Propulsion system knowledge aligned with optimizing efficiency, performance, reliability, and durability of race propulsion systems

  • Knowledge of database management software and methods

  • Demonstrated proficiency with analytical tools applicable to propulsion systems

  • High energy personality with an internal drive to take appropriate action to move projects forward in a fast-paced work environment

  • High level of independent judgement managing complex and ambiguous tasks with minimal guidance

  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects efficiently while working to tight deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical and non-technical information verbally and in writing; examples may be requested

  • High proficiency in root-cause analysis and resolution techniques

  • Highly organized with an expert attention to detail

  • Ability and eagerness to master new skills quickly - learning independently and from others as appropriate

  • Outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of key internal and external partners

  • Exceptional work ethic and integrity

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Motorsports experience is preferred; Collegiate programs such as Formula SAE or personal hobby engagement considered acceptable experience

  • Experience with design and analysis tools (Team Center, CAD, FEA, CFD. GT Power)

  • Familiarity with CAN communications protocols and troubleshooting

  • Systems experience: Data Acquisition, Motorsports Electronics, Engine Management Systems, Hybrid/EV Systems

  • Simulation experience (e.g. HIL, SIL, and DIL systems)

  • Software experience: MATLAB, Simulink, VBA, Python, C++
