Principal Structural Engineer

The position:

An exciting opportunity exists for a Principal Structural Engineer to join our expanding Structural Engineering team and play a crucial role in the design and development of our F1 car.

Working closely with the Head of Structural Engineering you will be responsible for managing projects to ensure our structures meet their strength and stiffness targets, balancing performance with safety and reliability.

This demanding but fulfilling role will suit an ambitious and innovative experienced engineer with an ability to achieve excellence whist working on multiple projects with tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of leading the structural analysis of complex engineering projects from concept stage through detailed design and into manufacture.

The position responsibilities:

  • Lead the structural analysis of metallic and composite F1 car components using both Finite Element Analysis and hand calculation methods
  • Demonstrate technical expertise related to specific areas of the car, sharing knowledge with other team members as appropriate
  • Develop innovative new structural concepts and identify opportunities for mass reduction, working closely with the Design and Aerodynamics teams to influence car performance
  • Benchmarking of analysis methods against industry standards to promote a culture of continuous development
  • Supervision of other team members, checking that best analysis practice is being applied
  • Project management including liaison with planning and production scheduling teams

Desired skills:

  • Structural analysis using Siemens NX and NX Nastran or similar FEA software
  • Structural optimisation using Genesis or similar software
  • Comprehensive knowledge of calculation methods based on first principles, including fatigue analysis methods
  • Thorough understanding of structural behaviour of metallic and composite engineering materials, as well as related manufacturing methods
  • Effective people management skills and in depth knowledge of current F1 technology and analysis methods

Minimum qualifications:

Degree qualified in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Marine or other related engineering discipline

Significant experience gained leading analysis projects in a top-level motorsport field

The Williams Group are based in Grove, Oxfordshire. We offer free onsite parking and large open green spaces to unwind during breaks. We are located five minutes from Wantage, our closest town centre.
