Motorsports Competition – Sportscar Performance Engineer

Job Description

Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite at minimum three (3) days each week.

 

The Role

This role will work within GM Motorsports Performance Engineering to support IMSA and WEC Sportscar programs.  This group is responsible for driving on-track performance improvements through guiding long-term vehicle development directions and providing event specific vehicle configuration, setup, and strategy recommendations to supported race teams.  This role will support all sportscar series objectives by performing analysis in a variety of areas, including vehicle dynamics analysis, simulation model correlation and refinement, on-track, rig-test and DIL data reduction and interpretation, methods development, competitor analysis and reporting tasks.  To be successful in this role, you will need to maintain relationships and alignment with supported race team personnel, travel to occasional race and test events, and closely collaborate with the many groups internal to GM motorsports.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate with GM supported teams and GM personnel to understand team objectives, contribute to a coordinated development effort, and convey findings to all necessary groups

 

Continuously strive to improve GM Motorsports program’s tools, analysis methods, and vehicle dynamics understanding by:

  • Reimagining and prototyping new and better solutions to common problems or questions

  • Correlating existing methods and validating new improvements against track and test data

  • Working with GM Software team to implement solutions in our production tools

 

Implement vehicle simulation (desktop, DOE, DIL) and data analysis methods, to develop race winning solutions through:

  • Race-specific setup refinement

  • Conceptual studies to guide big-picture development efforts

  • Competitor analysis and event characterization

  • Race strategy optimization

 

Clearly present findings, recommendations, and analysis results through well organized and actionable reports and in-person follow-up

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related subject

  • 2+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including IndyCar, F1, NASCAR, IMSA, WEC, or similar

  • Intimate knowledge of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including offline simulation and DIL.  Demonstrated experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance

  • Proficient programing in python, MATLAB, or similar language

  • Experience analyzing on-track performance, defining performance metrics, and deriving actionable recommendations through application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods

  • Strong organization skills, exceptional work ethic, a forward-thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Race Engineering experience in a professional Sportcar series, WEC or IMSA LMDh program, with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy

  • Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar

  • Knowledge and experience in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation

  • Experience with aerodynamic testing and applying physical and/or CFD results to vehicle modeling tools for on-track performance optimization

  • Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post
