Mechanical Design Engineer - America's Cup

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team have joined forces with INEOS Britannia, as Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup competition, to be hosted in Barcelona in 2024. This project brings together two highly complementary spheres of high-performance, high-technology engineering and sporting challenge, with the goal of being the first British team to win the America’s Cup in its 173-year history.

 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work on a variety of projects across the race yacht’s foils, sailing systems and hull platform. The role will take assigned projects from engineering design through test and implementation onto the boat, using an analytical approach alongside a high attention to detail.  You must be comfortable challenging yourself and others with respect and passion to drive our projects forward whilst striving to achieve the best possible results.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with Hydro and Aerodynamicists, Structural Engineers, and other engineering departments you will produce optimised designs to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability.

  • Take technical ownership of a variety of projects across the yacht, encompassing both metallic and composite design.

  • Generating 3D models, assemblies and 2D drawings including defining and documenting manufacturing information.

  • Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs that achieve optimal yacht performance.

  • Support in the definition of performance and reliability test & development programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle and in support of the team’s reliability function.

Candidate Profile

  • Mechanical, automotive, aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar qualification.

  • Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and its application with a solid first principles understanding of materials and manufacturing techniques.

  • Experience in Mechanical design in F1, high performance sailing, or another top-level motorsport category is an advantage.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX composite and surfacing design package would be beneficial.

  • Use of finite element analysis tools (ideally with Catia V5/3DX package) and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.

  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration.

  • High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines.
