Durability Testing Engineer

Description & Requirements

Background

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

To perform engineering activities for high-performance road car durability testing programmes, managing and monitoring the durability attribute development. The role is based at the McLaren testing facility, within the Idiada proving ground in Spain.

Reporting to the Senior Durability Testing Engineer, the Durability Testing Engineer will be based at the McLaren testing facility, within the Idiada proving ground in Spain, and should expect to travel occasionally overseas, principally for the purposes of supporting testing activities and of technical contacts. Shift working is required over a 7 day 2 shift system.

Principal Accountabilities

To take responsibility for planning, preparing, monitoring, analysing and reporting of activities related to vehicle durability tests.

Main tasks:

  • Test planning: definition of the day by day test plan (including control plan, and consumables/spares plan), according to the resources and facilities available to execute the requested activities
  • Monitor the execution of the plan, revising and making contingency plans as required
  • Monitoring of the vehicle attributes degradation during the test, trough:
    • analysis and comparison of the control plan results (subjective and objective)
    • feedback by the durability drivers,
    • analysis of acquired data
  • Tracking of relevant tested components and the relative fatigue accumulated, through the McLaren/Durability informatics tool.
  • Management/Execution of the planned checks and controls (objective/subjective)
  • Analysis of the data acquired to monitor vehicle attributes degradation and diagnose issues
  • Managing test efficiency and timings : capability to minimize the vehicle downtimes and the testing costs, with quick problem solving and strategic decisions
  • Durability Issues and failures: accurate and quick first level diagnosis and related reporting through the McLaren informatics tools. Supported by the Durability Subject Matter Experts team.
  • Additional Reporting: daily test status update reports, daily update of performance degradation analysis reports, periodical updates of test plan reports, final test reports.
