Design Analysis Engineer - Entry Level

OVERVIEW: Entry-Level and Early-Career Design Engineering position with an emphasis on applied computer aided engineering (CAE). The Design Analyst 1 will support general mechanical design and release tasks using commercial CAD software and PDM systems as well as modeling, simulation, testing, data analysis, and reporting tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & SKILLS:

Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to all the following:

  • Mechanical Systems Packaging, Design, and Release

  • Vehicle systems and component concept development and packaging using parametric solids CAD modeling

  • Development of mechanism geometry and package clearances for articulation

  • Verify packaging requirements and clearances to Pratt & Miller standards, per system

  • Support manufacturing by answering questions and responding to ECRs

  • Prepare project status reports

  • Utilize data from, provide data to, and interact with Pratt & Miller functional departments

  • Mechanical Systems Analysis and Testing

  • Mechanical system modeling and simulation (CAE)

  • Application of linear-static and nonlinear Finite Element Analysis in design and optimization

  • Laboratory testing, data analysis and signal processing

  • Use automotive experience to add value to the customers engineering process (i.e. validation and testing support)

  • Prepare and present analysis and test reports

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Engineering

  • 1-3 years’ experience applying finite methods analysis techniques in the motorsports, automotive, mobility, aerospace, or defense industry (relevant academic experience, such as FSAE or supervised research projects, may be considered as a partial substitute)

  • Experience (1+ years) with at least one commercial FEA package

    • Examples: ANSYS, Altair Optistruct/RADIOSS, LS-DYNA, Nastran

  • Familiarity with CFD may be considered in lieu of FEA

  • Familiarity with 1D simulation tools (e.g. Dymola, MATLAB Simulink) will also be considered

  • Experience (1+ years) with at least one commercial CAD system

    • Examples: Siemens NX, PTC Creo, Catia, Solidworks

  • Experience (1+ years) with a Math programming language

    • Examples: MATLAB, C++, VBA, Python

  • Proficiency with common Microsoft Office software products (or another vendor equivalent)

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint

DESIRED SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • M.S. or PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Science and Engineering

  • The ideal candidate will be able to work seamlessly across different software platforms

  • Experience with the Altair Hyperworks Suite (HyperMesh, HyperView, HyperGraph)

  • Specific experience or academic background with mechanics of materials, vibrations, metal fatigue, finite element or volume analysis, fracture mechanics, and/or fluid dynamics

  • Experience designing, instrumenting, conducting, and post-processing materials, structures, and/or crash testing

  • Additional consideration will be given for specific education or expertise in:

  • Engineering vehicle systems (chassis, suspension, body, engine, driveline, etc)

  • Part design, release, and manufacturing

  • Composite structures analysis

  • Optimization methods and software for engineering problems

  • Frequency response analysis methods

  • Explicit nonlinear analysis methods

  • Proposal writing, cost estimating and contract development

  • Computer software and hardware considerations for CAE, including cloud computing

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Stress will occasionally occur.

  • May be required to support prototype build and test activities.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • Approximately 45 hrs per week averaged over the course of each year

  • Start times vary according to project and individual, typically between 6a and 9a

  • Scheduled meetings are typically contained between 7a and 5p

  • Working hours are typically contained between 6a and 7p

  • Working hours outside of these ranges may be required in extenuating circumstances

Working Environment

  • Work will typically be performed in an office environment.

  • On-site support during prototype builds and testing may be required.

  • Travel (up to 10%) may be required for customer and supplier meetings, off-site training, off-site testing, and attendance at industry conferences.

  • The essential duties of this position can generally be fulfilled working from home, and this may be requested due to COVID-19.
