POSITION SUMMARY:
Join a team that is responsible for maintaining the buildings and grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which plays host to the World's Largest Single-Day Sporting Event, the Indianapolis 500®. This full-time position will expose you to many different projects throughout the facility and offers an unmatched opportunity to be a part of the execution and operations of our events. You will get to experience and learn what is takes to prepare the track (oval and road course) for each event!

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Apply paint to surfaces including canvas, walls, floors, doors, and cabinets, asphalt, grass, gravel, concrete block walls, seating areas and concrete
  • Mix, match, and apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, and other finishes
  • Scrape, sandpaper, prime, or seal surfaces prior to painting
  • Clean walls to ensure proper adherence
  • Cover surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection
  • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives
  • Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting
  • Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs
  • Other tasks could include:
    • Numbering/alphabetizing stands and assisting with signs
    • Track Conversion
    • Change temporary walls as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the Paint Shop Foreman. The Facilities Department is responsible for the entirety of the grounds and buildings at IMS. Due to the sometimes-unpredictable nature of being a multi-event facility, all members of the Facilities team may be required to occasionally help with responsibilities outside their normal job description.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • High school graduate or GED

Skills/Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in painting preferred
  • Forklift and heavy equipment operator certification are preferred but not required. IMS will provide forklift training.
  • Auto painting experience preferred, but not required (inclusive of minor auto body repairs)
  • Must be able to work at heights of 30 feet. Prefer individual who can work an aerial platform.

Travel/Work Hours

  • No travel required
  • General hours are Monday-Friday, 7:15am-4pm, however this will vary greatly during events.
  • Candidates must be flexible through the summer and able to work weekends and overtime when needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and repeated bending.
  • Constant reaching high/low/level and repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands.
  • Frequent use of ladders/scaffold/lifts.
  • Specific vision abilities include distinguishing basic shades and colors.

  • Employee will frequently work outdoors, which requires physical strength and stamina to endure extreme heat, cold, rain and other conditions.
  • Work on site may be dirty, dusty, muddy and/or under noisy conditions.
  • Painters may also have to work in cramped spaces, or at heights.
  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. It is required that the employee wear an IMS supplied respirator.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be loud, due to professional racing events.
