Vehicle Testing Engineer - FTC

Purpose of Role

An opportunity exists within the Vehicle Development group for an experienced engineer to perform test and development engineering activities as part of a high-performance road car programme.

Reporting to the Senior Testing Engineer, the Vehicle Development Engineer will be based at Idiada, Spain and should be available to travel regularly in Europe and overseas.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To take full responsibility for specifying, preparing, monitoring, analysing and reporting of activities related to the build, test, development and validation of vehicle development and attribute systems
  • To work closely with the Technicians, Instrumentation, Development and Attribute teams to ensure that vehicles are always kept to the required test standard, and when appropriate, the cars can be evaluated by the Executive Team.
  • To focus on efficient testing and instrumentation/data acquisition quality to ensure “Right First Time” approach.
  • To prepare short-term plans and budgets for testing activities.
  • To follow the McLaren Development Process (MDP) ensuring that all activity is correctly documented and appropriate standards and processes are followed.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A good degree in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering is preferred
  • Significant experience in an automotive test and development environment.
  • Excellent English communication skills required, both verbal and written
  • Experience of the following is an advantage:
    • low volume, high performance vehicle programmes
    • delivery of whole vehicle development programmes, from concepts through to series production
    • a broad range of vehicle and rig data acquisition, test and analysis techniques
  • Be able to apply detailed technical knowledge to the understanding of new technologies, development of engineering designs and resolution of engineering problems
  • Familiarity with automotive diagnostic tools (eg: CANape, ETAS, Monaco) would be an advantage.
  • Must be proficient with all common Microsoft Office applications including Project

  • Able to work well alongside a team of prototype technicians, providing leadership and guidance where needed
  • Must demonstrate a high level of self-motivation, initiative and flexibility, and determination to see a task through to completion
  • Must be prepared to adopt a flexible approach to working hours to ensure development activities are carried out as and when required
