Purpose of Role

As a Senior Project Engineer within the Series team, you will be able to push and develop your engineering capability, influencing future system design. With a direct impact on vehicle performance and perceived quality in the market, you will be expected to create and deliver innovative designs and ideas exceeding the current benchmark. This is a role that will push you to develop your engineering capability with a major influence on the overall product with direct input into numerous aspects around the design of the car. These systems span across multiple manufacturing technologies and materials including injection moulded plastics, carbon fibre and metallic pressings.

You will be faced with technical challenges and will be responsible for attending meetings/reviews and addressing issues relevant to your commodity to best serve your internal stakeholder groups such as Styling, SQD, Purchasing and Project Management teams as well as the end user, or customer. This role offers great exposure to other areas of the business and at various levels through and up to Executive Director level.

In parallel you will also be involved in the generation and continuous development of technology roadmaps and standards for future vehicle projects, ensuring McLaren are the benchmark.

Principal Accountabilities

  • With a bias towards warranty, you will take complete ownership and management of QCRs that directly affect cars within Series production as well as customer cars in service
  • Reporting directly to the Principal Engineer and supporting the cross functional project team ensuring design and engineering integrity to exceed performance, quality and commercial targets
  • Ensure robust and effective containments for all build concerns, including root cause analysis, possible lineside support and the delivery of permanent countermeasures as required
  • Supporting and directing external resource to ensure deliverables are met in line with McLaren’s standards
  • Providing technical feedback to the project teams within the function groups
  • Creating and updating Design Guides, FMEA’s, DVP’s, Vehicle / System level test spec’s
  • Utilising a clear, rigorous simultaneous engineering approach to develop right first time design, in line with the McLaren Development Process
  • Supplier liaison & management to ensure delivery to the required quality & cost in line with project timelines
  • Ensure manufacturability and compliance with quality standards of all components and systems within the defined BOM (DFA & DFM)
  • Influence and actively participate in the selection of business partners, including suppliers
  • Chairing key project meetings advocating a cross-functional approach
  • Creation and management of Technology Roadmaps

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Min 3 years’ experience within a Production or OEM environment – automotive exposure is advantageous
  • Experienced in the delivery of components & system engineering tasks from concept through to production, within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP
  • High level of technical knowledge & experience within component, and system design, development, manufacturing and testing
  • High level of knowledge in all system technical documentations, e.g. Design Guides, DFMEA’s & DVP’s
  • Strong working knowledge of the engineering materials used on our vehicles: plastics, composites, glazing, aluminium and alloys
  • Good understanding of latest Automotive manufacturing processes, feasibility and technology
  • Robust, logical problem-solving skills and techniques; including root cause analysis, generation of countermeasure proposals and selection using robust evaluation techniques – knowledge of 8D Six Sigma advantageous
  • Strong commercial awareness, understanding of 'Business Case', profit etc
  • Strong interpersonal skills – ability to communicate to all levels of the business including external partners
  • CAD knowledge for assembly and part interrogation – design experience in CATIA advantageous
  • Good understanding of GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products
