Purpose of Role

  • Create concept & production ready surface solutions compatible with concurrent engineering exercises to the McLaren Design Process (MDP) & program timing.
  • Support the Manager and Head of in the delivery of any outsourced hard models, from ergonomic bucks through to show car properties.
  • Drive the program forwards delivering design intent whilst fulfilling the business’ requirements.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead a given zone on exterior or interior model to deliver the design vision/strategy.
  • Contribute to the Planning workloads as required.
  • Produce high impact physical content for senior presentations and weekly design reviews.
  • Work within the wider CMD, CAS, Clay & Engineering teams; to present feasible design solutions to Function Group representatives and Senior Management for sign-off.
  • Reconcile design intent, quality & manufacturing feasibility with aerodynamics, engineering and commercial requirements.
  • Communicate progress and critical issues to the Functional Manager
  • Attend Design & CAS reviews as required and action next steps.
  • Support with cutter path programming for all model making activities.
  • Offer input into the creation and update of design standards & process.
  • Maintain a tidy work space.
  • Allocate secondary tasks to team members, such as preparing review content.
  • Be a role model, live the values and communicate the design pillars to other departments.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Education in a design, modelling or pattern making background preferred.
  • Good verbal & written presentation skills.
  • Strong physical modelling and surface design skills (hard modelling and clay).
  • Good knowledge of Work NC (milling, cutter paths).
  • PC literate. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience on full size and scale clay properties. Led an exterior or interior G0-G4.
  • Good understanding of ergonomics, aerodynamic principles & legal requirements.
