Job Location

  • Manhattan Beach, CA (Hybrid Work – In Office and Remote) is preferred.

General Role Overview

The Lead Engineer, Test & Validation will be responsible for complete vehicle test and validation functions.  This role will report to the Manager, Test & Validation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accountable for planning and conducting of whole vehicle test and validation activities.

  • Create DVP&R documents, identify asset requirements, and coordinate test activities.

  • Identify appropriate testing locations globally for all vehicle-level testing activities.

  • Lead the process to identify correct test vehicles, hardware, software, and parts requirements for all test assets and manage the entire test planning process.

  • Support creation of the prototype, test vehicle, test parts, and testing budget for assigned programs.

  • Work with all stakeholders in engineering and program to maximize the test hardware usage and allocation.

  • Develop prototype vehicle build and test schedules and monitor usage.

  • Coordinate test fleet updates and track specifications changes.

  • Research, propose, and validate vehicle-level targets based on benchmark data or internal test results.

  • Plan vehicle evaluation and sign-off events.

  • Develop unique corporate test standards from knowledge and experience, using industry best practices and standards (SAE, ECE, GB/T, etc.).

  • Plan and coordinate all internal and 3rd party test activities in line with DVP requirements.

  • Monitor and communicate the status of overall test activities for assigned programs by creating a detailed planning and tracking process.

  • Follow industry test standards and report results to the greater team.

  • Ensure vehicle-level and component-level development and testing is conducted as planned and reports are issued to the development teams

  • Conduct benchmark vehicle assessments and component analysis and create related reports.

  • Track and follow open testing and development items and work with the global team to identify and resolve concerns by following budget and timing constraints.

  • Set up and assist with subjective vehicle evaluation workshops.

  • Conduct performance and functional testing as required, prepare detailed reports of results, and follow all related concern tracking to close.

  • Identify instrumentation requirements to ensure program testing requirements are met.

  • Coordinate and participate in environmental tests activities (i.e., CET/V, HET/V, Altitude).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.  Master of Science is preferred.

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in automotive engineering, with specific expertise in Whole Vehicle Test & Validation of EV’s.

  • Must have previous experience in successfully conducting Electric Vehicle (EV) test programs.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Competencies

  • Hands-on experience conducting vehicle performance, thermal / climatic, and functional testing.

  • Functional understanding of at least 2 to 3 major vehicle systems (Durability, Powertrain, Electronics, Chassis, Thermal, EV System, Battery, etc.).

  • Experience with automotive industry competitive analysis and benchmarking, including teardown, measurement, data collection, data analysis, and reporting.

  • Automotive industry experience with proving grounds and test facilities.

  • High standard of driving capability, with experience in subjective vehicle evaluation.

  • Good understanding of automotive testing instrumentation and data analysis.

  • Good knowledge of collection and analysis of vehicle data using CAN tools and other diagnostic tools.

  • Experience creating reports of complex vehicle data and test results.

  • Fundamental understanding of automotive legislation for testing in NA, EU, and CN would be an advantage.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with outside partners and test labs is a must.

  • Strong leadership, presentation, and communication skills.

  • Strong organization skills and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple ongoing assignments.

  • Ability to effectively present data and communicate complex topics within the organization.

  • Ability to effectively use project planning software and tools (MS Project, JIRA, etc.).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally, as required.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. unassisted, bend, stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, sit, walk, and/or run.
