Role Overview

The Hardware Design Engineer – Safety Systems will design and develop safety-critical components in Fisker’s advanced next generation EE architecture. This candidate will be a member of a team of EE Hardware Design Engineers who will develop multiple innovative hardware units for our upcoming vehicles. The candidate will report to the Manager of EE Hardware Design and work closely with their peers in the EE Hardware Design team. They will also work closely with internal and external stakeholders such as suppliers and technology partners.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen interest and deep technical skills in designing advanced automotive EE system architectures with an emphasis on safety levels ranging from ASIL B to ASIL D.

Responsibilities

  • Understand requirements for safety-critical components in our next generation architecture.

  • Design systems to fulfil the requirements while delivering exceptional system safety.

  • Create functional prototypes based on the designs.

  • Continuously validate and improve the prototypes with suppliers and partners.

  • Own testing of the prototypes for all operational conditions, troubleshoot and diagnose errors, and take remedial actions to fix the errors.

  • Ensure software compatibility and support software integration for the components.

  • Deliver progress and continuous improvement of the components.

  • Develop and deliver production samples for the component designs.

  • Support the integration and validation of your components into the vehicle.

  • Support optimal packaging of the components into the vehicle, addressing all requirements of power, space, and thermal management.

  • Keep up to date with the latest advancements in automotive safety systems.

  • Innovate and ideate on new designs and technologies.

Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience

  • Master’s degree in computer engineering, electronics & communications engineering, or electrical engineering.

  • 3+ years of hands-on hardware design and development experience in a fast-paced, safety-focused organization in the automotive or similar space.

  • Strong understanding of microcontrollers and other safety-related EE components.

  • Proven expertise in Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL), ISO 26262, and other relevant automotive safety standards.

  • Proven expertise in successfully taking new hardware from design to production.

  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Allegro, or Altium.

  • Experience with HDL languages such as Verilog, VHDL, or SystemC.

  • Good understanding of software architectures and integration processes.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and precision.

  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong familiarity with emerging connected, software-defined vehicle technologies.

  • Must be comfortable with operating in a fast-paced, startup environment.

Preferred Attributes/ Competencies

  • Prior experience designing and delivering components in the Automotive EE space such as Infotainment, Connectivity, or ADAS/Autonomous Driving.
  • Strong understanding of packaging and operating constraints for hardware components in the automotive environment.

  • Must be willing to travel both domestically, as well as internationally, as required
