Electrical System Engineer

The Opportunity:

A fabulous opportunity for an Electrical System Engineer to join the small yet growing, dedicated and talented team at Lola as we embark on the next phase of the adventure. The Electrical System Engineer will primarily develop and specify electrical hardware systems for prototype and race cars across projects. Responsible for working with the Technical Project Team Leaders and other members of the Technical Team to define the vehicle electrical system and manage relevant development activities, in line with the project technical, timing and budget targets set.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Creates engineering electrical system definitions, including 3D CAD layouts and 2D connectivity drawings, following the Lola design and engineering guidelines.
  • Works with Technical Project Leaders, other members of the Technical and Commercial Teams to define:

 

  • and source electrical and electronic hardware.
  • electrical component and system test requirements.
  • the electrical system and component installation on the vehicle.
  • and maintain the Project Technical Specification and Project Plan
  • and manage the Project Budget, Project Job list and ensure Job list tasks are carried out and updated according to project requirements.
  • internal and external resource requirements.
  • and manage internal and external resources in line with the Project Plan and Budget.

 

  • Manages and carries out electrical component and system testing as required.

  • Works across more than one project as required.

  • Ensures all engineering output meets the requirements of the Project Technical Specification, Project Plan and Budget, is of high quality, complies with the Lola standards and guidelines and attention to detail is paid in all areas.

  • Ensures all engineering work complies with the relevant sections of the Technical Regulations and takes account of the requirements of the relevant Sporting Regulations.

  • Contributes regular updates/input to the Project Mass Tracker/Project report.

  • Manages technical activities carried out by external suppliers for design, development and production as required.

  • Works with the Technical Specialists to optimise solutions within technical, timing and budget constraints.

  • Contributes to Design Review Meetings with members of the design team and other project members to develop the electrical system in line with the project requirements.

  • Attends regular Project Review Meetings to track progress across technical areas and ensure alignment with the Project Technical Specification, Project Plan and Budget.

  • Contributes to:

 

  • the FMEA process for safety critical aspects of the project to ensure due diligence has been applied and documented.
  • to the Project Faults reporting and rectification process and ensures electrical system faults are dealt with effectively in a timely manner.
  • to Project Technical Operating documentation: Build Manual, Torque List, Operating Limits, Component Maintenance and Lifing Schedule.
  • and undertakes Test Bench, HiL, DiL and Track test activities.
  • the development of the Lola Technical Structure and Processes.

 

  • Assists with the selection of suppliers, for design, development, and production.
  • Works with external suppliers to ensure technical, quality and budget requirements for components are met.
  • Provides technical information as required by the relevant Governing Bodies.
  • Ensures all design and technical documentation is saved in a disciplined, well organised manner and that the relevant Lola team members have access to the information they require.
  • Pays attention to detail in all areas.

 

Technical Skills required:

  • Understanding of low and high voltage automotive electronics as applied in a racing environment.
  • Ability to define LV and HV wiring as applied in a racing environment.
  • Wiring harness design using 3D CAD design software.
  • Understanding of sensor and actuator characteristics and their selection in a racing environment.
  • Ability to transfer sensor and actuator setups between lab, test bench and race car.
  • Understanding of Li Ion battery technology.
  • Understanding of PMSM technology
  • Fault identification and rectification in LV and HV systems
  • Data analysis using one of the racing world standard packages (Atlas, Darab, Wintax)
  • Electrical systems support for HiL and Dil operation.
  • Ability to work at test benches and at the racetrack.
  • Proficient PC skills

Qualifications & Experience required:

  • Degree Level or commensurate work experience
  • Motorsport, engineering, electrical degree desirable but not essential
  • Project Management experience desirable but not essential
  • An interest in and understanding of engineering/motorsport.

 

The Successful Candidate might be:

  • An existing Electrical Systems Engineer in a motorsport/ automotive company
  • An electrical systems enthusiast who has acquired the appropriate experience, skills & knowledge.
  • An experienced engineer with the relevant skills and knowledge looking for a change in role.

 

 

 

Role Location & Hours:
