Design Engineer

The company:

Meyer Shank Racing [MSR]’s facility is located in Columbus, Ohio (United States). We are taking part in various race series, most recently IMSA and Indycar.

Purpose & summary of the role:

The primary role for this position is to lead, solve and execute design projects.

As the Design Engineer you will be in charge of all aspects of engineering projects in the areas of Design, from the start of a project to its completion and delivery. Primary tasks include:

  • Computer Aided Design, Manufacturing. You will be responsible for the entire process, from measuring, scanning, drawing, determining the correct materials and manufacturing processes, and producing appropriate documents and files for manufacturing.
  • Parts quality control. Including the use of metrology and scanning methods.
  • Communication with external suppliers as related to machining, fabrication, part prototyping, modifications, and updates.
  • Working with the team’s engineering department, fabrication department, and other personnel to coordinate projects and workflows, and ensure the race team needs are met in a timely manner.

Location for the role:

This is a full-time position, and on site at the MSR’s facility located in Pataskala, Ohio, East of Columbus, Ohio.

Mobility: this may include traveling to test facilities, supplier facilities, or team competition venues.

Detailed responsibilities:

You will be required to lead or solve multi-disciplinary projects to support the race team. The responsibilities include:

  • Leading all design related projects, creating solutions for ideas or issues requiring design work, within a given timeline.
  • Creating and implementing mechanical designs. Including design and/or manufacture, and/or modification of racing cars, parts, and equipment. Extend to electrical/electronic and wiring integration, as needed.
  • Creating models, drawings, schematics, and assemblies using the appropriate Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools.
  • The role requirements may possibly extend to lab or testing projects such as needed by the project scope.
  • Creating clear and complete documentation for use by engineers, suppliers, and others while conforming to accepted standards and practices.
  • Preparing bills of material, and/or other computer output files used in the manufacturing process of creating the final product.
  • Leading quality control and metrology projects.
  • Leading scanning projects, and inspection projects.
  • CAD processing (extend to FEA, CFD, as needed).

You will be coordinating work with the appropriate personnel including engineers, management, team technicians and mechanics to ensure that the solutions developed meet the needs of the respective project and the team.

Required skills:

  • Proficiency with CAD solid modeling tools: SolidWorks, Siemens NX. (Expert level)
  • Technical drawing interpretation and knowledge, GD&T.
  • Experience utilizing CAE / FEA tools for engineering analysis.
  • Good knowledge of materials, their utilization, and characteristics. Including knowledge of composite materials.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping technologies, characteristics, and software.
  • Mechanical hands-on aptitude.
  • Self-sufficient and organized: be able to operate, organize and solve problems and technical challenges autonomously.
  • Ability to deliver projects on a short timeline.

Required experience:

  • B.S.M.E. +5 years of experience in automotive, motorsports or aerospace industries.
  • Experience leading projects from conception, to manufacture, to implementation.
