Damper Technician

We currently have a position available for a full-time Damper Technician in Indianapolis to prepare and provide quality control of mechanical components of race car dampers for race and test events and may also participate in pit stops.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build damper components according to established procedures for each race and test event.
  • Disassemble, clean and perform non-destructive testing of damper components.
  • Prepare manufactured precision parts for dampers.
  • Operate the damper dynamometer and  review and save data.
  • Select pistons and valve combinations to build dampers that meet performance specification.
  • Meet specified deadlines for preparing dampers during race car preparation.
  • Load the dampers, alternate dampers, parts and necessary equipment on the transporters.
  • Travel with the team to races and tests to ensure dampers are properly functioning.
  • Troubleshoot damper performance issues and fine tune performance on the track.
  • Maintain accurate records of changes on all adjustable components of the dampers following post event teardown.
  • Communicate with Damper Manager and Engineers to support the development and continuous improvement of functional and quality components.
  • Professionally represent the team and its sponsors on and off-track premises.
  • Provide assistance to other team members on other duties as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3+ years’ experience as a motorsports damper technician or mechanic.
  • Experience with modern, multi-way adjustable dampers and/or inerters preferred.
  • Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills required.
  • Must meet professional level performance criteria to be a member of the pit crew.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of set-up specifications for race cars and dampers and the appropriate safety mechanisms for each component.
  • Must be able to interpret and follow blueprints and spec sheets to build dampers for individual race and test events. 
  • Must be proficient in using precision measuring devices. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of emergency safety procedures and an ability to use safety equipment correctly.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills required.
  • Must have excellent communications skills (both oral and written) and diplomacy, be willing to ask questions and able to give and receive constructive feedback.
