Chief Metallurgist

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to work within a world leading organisation? We’re looking for a Chief Metallurgist to join us as we continue to grow and deliver high profile projects to both our motorsport and high-performance automotive customers.

Reporting to the Head of R&D, you will lead a focused team of highly motivated technical staff, prioritising workload and assigning resources as required. You will give high levels of support to the Heat Treatment department and provide manufacturing quality assurance of internal and external heat treatment processes. The role also includes building and developing essential cross department relationships within the organisation, helping to develop the use of new materials and bring future success to both Xtrac and our customers.

The ideal candidate will be an approachable, dedicated and self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal and organisational skills, who can prioritise effectively in a fast-moving environment. You will be a confident communicator with the ability to build strong and positive relationships within Xtrac and with suppliers whilst ensuring that internal and external customers are satisfied on time in full.

Your main responsibilities will also include:

  • Conduct research into materials and heat treatment methods and processes.
  • Work closely with the Heat Treatment Manager to ensure metallurgical and heat treatment processes and procedures are understood and if necessary, create new or edit existing work instructions or standards and associated training materials.
  • Be responsible for providing a safe and reliable working laboratory.
  • Provide research and development engineering support to the Design Office and Advanced Engineering Group.

This is a fast pace, busy role and offers high job satisfaction so if you’re looking for a hands-on role, with integration between our internal departments and you have a passion for R&D, then this could be the opportunity for you.

To be successful in this role, we’re looking for the following skills/experience:

  • Have experience of a machining, heat treatment or manufacture environment.
  • Have experience leading and developing highly motivated technical staff.
  • Be educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally in a material, metallurgical or engineering discipline or be qualified by experience in a similar role.
  • Have a foundation in ferrous metallurgy including structure, performance and behaviour.
  • Have experience in specifying, implementing, running and reporting on material test programmes.
  • Have knowledge of creating safe working environments and regulations such as DSEAR and PUWER.
  • Have practical hands on experience with metallurgical sample preparation and failure investigations.
  • Be able to communicate effectively, cross departmentally and with external customers.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and work to a structured approach to problem solving.
  • Be able to work under tight timescales and juggle multiple priorities.

No day is ever the same and sometimes things change at a rapid pace, so you’ll have a flexible and willing attitude to ensure the role is fulfilled at all times and potentially at short notice.
