Performance Engineer

Overview

Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) is seeking a highly analytical and driven Performance Engineer to support our NTT INDYCAR SERIES program. The Performance Engineer will work closely with the Race Engineer, Data Engineer, and Driver to optimize vehicle performance across all track types. This role requires strong technical expertise, data-driven decision-making, and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced race team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Analysis:

    • Analyze telemetry, chassis, and driver data to identify performance gains and areas for improvement.

    • Correlate simulation and track data to improve car setup and model accuracy.

  • Vehicle Performance Optimization:

    • Support the Race Engineer in setup preparation, balance optimization, and race strategy decisions.

    • Develop and manage performance metrics (tire degradation, fuel usage, aero efficiency, etc.).

    • Work with the dampers, aero, and simulation groups to improve predictability and repeatability.

  • Pre-Event Preparation:

    • Use simulation and historical data to prepare event setup baselines.

    • Generate run plans and performance reports before and after sessions.

  • Race Support:

    • Participate in all on-track sessions, providing live feedback and post-session performance summaries.

    • Collaborate with the strategy engineer to evaluate stint modeling, pit windows, and tire performance.

  • Development Projects:

    • Lead or support internal R&D projects related to simulation models, aero mapping, or vehicle dynamics.

    • Work with technical partners on integration of updates and tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Motorsport Engineering (or related field).

  • 3–7 years of experience in professional motorsport, ideally within INDYCAR, IMSA, or F2/F3 or NASCAR.

  • Proficiency in:

    • MATLAB / Python / Excel for data and performance analysis.

    • Simulation and analysis tools.

    • Telemetry and race data systems (Cosworth Pi Toolbox, MoTeC, Atlas, etc.).

  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, tire modeling, and aerodynamic performance.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to convey complex data to non-technical audiences.

  • Willingness to travel extensively to all race and test events.

Preferred Attributes

  • INDYCAR experience.

  • Experience correlating simulation and track data.

  • Experience running DIL sessions.

  • Proven ability to work efficiently under pressure during live events.

  • Passion for racing and continuous performance improvement.
