Purpose of Role

The Senior System Test Engineer is accountable for the planning, execution and reporting of McLaren body development and validation testing, ensuring robust design execution.

Working within the System Test team of Test & Development and reporting to the Principal System Test Engineer, the Senior System Test Engineer supports and influences the design and development of current and future technologies with the measurement of system performance, the detection and root cause analysis of concerns and the advancement of test data and methodologies.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Plan and execute McLaren managed system and vehicle level body tests defined in the design validation plan (DVP).
  • Design, build, commission and execute system and vehicle rig tests to a high technical standard.
  • Generate and maintain regular data driven test and status reports.
  • Conduct and support failure root cause analysis (RCA).
  • Prospect, nominate and co-ordinate outsourced test facility suppliers.
  • Create and maintain test procedures and strategies.
  • Plan and execute internal and competitor benchmarking tests.
  • Catalogue test data to aid system development and target setting.
  • Manage and report against programme testing budgets.
  • Identify and realise opportunities to improve validation processes from quality, timing and commercial perspectives.
  • Support the System Test team in the development and validation of chassis, thermal and powertrain systems.
  • Support Vehicle Development, Attribute, and computer aided engineering (CAE) testing to ensure representative, correlated, quality testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Engineering bachelor’s degree 2:1 or above
  • Knowledge and experience in automotive body validation procedures.
  • First-hand experience in the design, build, commissioning and running of test rigs including structural design and instrumentation for measurement, actuation and data acquisition.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Catia V5 design capability.
  • Understanding of automotive body materials, technologies and manufacturing processes.
  • Proven experience in root cause and failure mode analysis.
  • Commercial awareness with a demonstratable record of delivering projects to budget.
  • Understanding of automotive legislation.
  • Experience of low to medium volume vehicle production.
  • Comprehension of PPS, APQP and/or Six Sigma.
  • Fluency in English
