General Maintenance

MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY

Located in southern Virginia near the North Carolina border, Martinsville Speedway was built in 1947 by its founder H. Clay Earles. The track is the only venue to host NASCAR’s top series every year since its inception.  Martinsville Speedway conducts three major race event weekends each year. The track annually hosts the NASCAR Cup Series races in the spring and in the fall, the NASCAR Xfinity Series in the fall, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in the fall, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series race in spring, and the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 NASCAR's biggest, richest and most prestigious Late Model Stock Car race.

NASCAR seeks a talented professional to join our maintenance team in the position of General Maintenance based at Martinsville Speedway.

This position's primary responsibility is landscaping and grounds keeping around the facility.  In addition, to landscaping, performing custodial, minor maintenance, routine preventative maintenance and repair on buildings, facilities, and mechanical equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Care of established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Mow and edge lawns using power mowers and edgers.
  • Ability to operate and maintain many different pieces of equipment including vehicles, lifts, and potentially other heavy machinery. 
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, and shrubs, and apply mulch and pine needles for protection using gardening tools.
  • Ensure all flowering plants, ground-covering foliage, trees, shrubs are pruned and manicured accordingly
  • Ensure all mulch beds and landscaped areas are free of weeds and debris
  • Attach wires from planted trees to support stakes.
  • Follow planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage.
  • Water lawns, trees, or plants using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
  • Shovel snow from walks, driveways, or parking lots and spread salt in those areas as appropriate.
  • Uses hand and power tools for landscaping maintenance and  in making minor maintenance repairs and maintaining grounds and walks
  • Participates in general cleaning, and repair work. Uses brooms, mops, and floor equipment to sweep, mop, and clean floors
  • Gathers and disposes of trash and waste materials using specified procedures
  • Replenishes restroom supplies
  • Maintain the overall condition of the building and grounds
  • Perform preventive building maintenance duties.
  • Perform routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks, and leaking faucets.
  • Participate in general cleaning, painting, and repair work
  • Perform routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
  • Assemble and move furniture, hang pictures, set up and tear down chairs, tables and equipment in meeting rooms, and function rooms.
  • Basic office systems knowledge including but not limited to computer system & programs, cellular phone.  Microsoft Office suite knowledge preferred (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Hours will vary but will include all hours of operation, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary to attend events and to fulfill job responsibilities. Acceptance of work hours customary in the field of sport/entertainment is necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and high, precarious places. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, risk of electric shock, vibration and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud but can be very loud at times.
