Design Office Manager

General Summary:

This position reports to the Chief Designer and it is located in Maranello, Italy. Directs a group of Engineers to design and develop the Haas F1 car projects. The group is composed by Haas F1 engineers, Ferrari seconded and Dallara engineers. Interacts with the Chief Designer, the Chief Aerodynamicist, the Global Program Manager, the Performance Development Manager and the Chief Race & Test Engineer as it relates to F1 car design, development and reliability.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall performance of the department, ensuring targets and milestones are achieved.
  • Manage department personnel from recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement through to separation.
  • Mentor, train and guide personnel as required. Develop staff using effective performance reviews and development plans.
  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop trustworthy relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Responsible for establishing and adhering to departmental budgets to maintain a practical yet functional department.
  • Produce monthly departmental reports to the Chief Designer details the status of the department, including but not limited to, budget actuals and major projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Designer or their designee.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for delivering the Haas F1 car project and the projects related to its development program including the concept phase, achieving the project targets set and meeting the operational requirements.
  • Responsible of the reliability group, assuring the car reliability with proactive solutions in front of issues reported from track and during car build process.
  • Lead the innovation group with the evolution of new concepts, materials, simulations, numerical models and even structures to improve our abilities in the design of the car.
  • Provide experienced guidance to all group members as applied to the development of the car project.
  • Manage and oversee simulations, validations and track implementation ensuring complete ownership of tasks linked to the car projects and to the car reliability.
  • Oversee the ad hoc projects as assigned.
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.

 

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s level degree required.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering desired.
  • At least 15 years of work experience, 10 years of which must be in a professional motorsport’s environment.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to supervise others, communicate effectively, and liaise with fellow workers to get desired results.
  • Capable of working in a team environment to a very high standard and a positive work attitude.
  • Detailed knowledge of the complete F1 car design.
  • Proactive and incessant in pursuit of performance
  • Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations.
  • Quick decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical way.
  • Work well within a team environment with personnel at all levels.
  • A sympathetic approach to your work colleagues and an ability to integrate within a group environment.
  • A can-do positive approach and a willingness to help others is essential.

 

Equipment and Applications:

  • Solid knowledge in CAD – Catia V6/3DX,
  • Experience in working with engineering packages with 3D Microsoft Office, SharePoint

 

Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require some occasional domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

Fast- paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands.  Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
