Performance and Simulation Engineer

Performance and Simulation Engineer (Vehicle Thermal Performance)

Brackley

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and race winner George Russell.

The Team has set a new benchmark for Formula One success during the sport’s current Hybrid era, winning consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the Constructors’ Championship in 2021.

We have an exciting opening for a Performance and Simulation Engineer to join our Vehicle Performance Group. You’ll be part of a team of engineers working on the continuous wholistic car performance development programme through simulation and analysis.

The Role

As our Performance and Simulation Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the continuous development of the powertrain cooling models and analysis techniques to improve correlation with car data and the accuracy of development sensitivities.

  • Converting specialist knowledge and understanding into effective performance opportunities for competitive advantage: upfront studies, proof-of-concept, delivery of a race car solution with corresponding track support. As project lead or as expert in a cross-functional team.

  • Owning parts of the car cooling specification, giving timely actionable targets for aerodynamics as well as chassis and power unit design. Plan and resource the associated work with the group lead.

  • Factory support for car setup optimisation at race events.

What we are looking for:

  • Excellent academic background with a Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Degree (preferably masters, 2:1 minimum grade) or equivalent qualification.

  • Experience in heat transfer problems, cooling system designs, advanced data analysis and numerical optimisation

  • Advanced knowledge of Matlab or equivalent is a requirement. Experience with Dymola is a bonus.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, to ambitious deadlines, and under minimal supervision.

  • Motivated, independent and focused person with excellent communication skills.

The most unique aspect of this post besides Formula 1 is its combination of direct performance generation and hardware creation at the crossroads between the Aerodynamics department, the power unit manufacturer and the Design Office.

Performance Engineers wanting to broaden their skillset, Thermal Engineers looking for a different problem or Graduates eager to co-create their first machine in a world-class environment should apply.
