Principal Mechanical Engineer - Materials Technology

BAE Systems are recruiting for a Principal Engineer (materials technology) working on their latest submarine programmes.

£52.15 PAYE or £68.81 Umbrella per hour - inside IR35

12 month contract.

Location: Barrow in Furness.

Working arrangements: Onsite - this work does require a lot of onsite presence, may be able to move to hybrid once embedded and up to speed.

• As the lead mechanical engineer for a number of workstreams within the Additive Manufacturing Pilot Part Programme, taking specific parts thought the entire parts maturity process and collating a body of evidence to demonstrate acceptance, fitness for purpose, legislative requirements, and safety.
• Support the Submarine Delivery Enterprise on developing a route to qualification for additively manufactured parts.
• Support the development of individuals within the team to enhance skills and competencies, such that technical capability objectives are fully achieved.

Core Duties
Typical duties include (but are not limited to): (suggested 5-10 bullets/statements, indicative of the role at this level)
? Working closely with engineering teams and suppliers, both internal and external, as required ensuring that their requirements are adequately supported and that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate and agreed.
? Perform analysis, evaluation and resolution of complex engineering issues and specifications with regards to the design, manufacture and test of additively manufactured parts.
? Develop innovative and creative solutions to challenging engineering problems and issues.
? Develop, promote and share new additive technologies for implementation across businesses and programme(s).

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge: (Recommended max 5 bullets/statements)
• Significant experience designing, developing and qualifying mechanical parts and systems (e.g. hydraulics, cooling or fluid systems).
• Knowledge and experience of the entre engineering lifecycles from conception through to qualification.
• Experience with metal additive manufacturing technologies (desirable)
Skills: (Recommended max 5 /statements)
• Ability to develop qualification strategies for new technologies.
• Effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a small team.

• Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent (expected)
• Chartered engineer (preferred)

• The Additive Manufacturing team, whilst only being established recently, is a small group of specialised engineers dedicated to promoting, furthering and embedding this technology within the business. Sitting within the Specialist Engineering and Technology Group, outside of the main programmes, the team interact and work with all functions across the business as well as a number of external stakeholders.
