Motorsports Competition - Performance Tools Developer

Job Description

Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite an average of three (3) days each week.

The Role

GM Motorsports is seeking a Performance Tool Developer to develop performance metrics, conceptualize new analysis methods, and implement these techniques to produce improved on-track performance. The focus of the Performance Tools Developer is the derivation and validation of new performance metrics and new analysis procedures to better characterize vehicle or team performance. Collaboration with the GM Software group is essential in implementing these methods into production tools. The team will initially focus on supporting new GM motorsports ventures, including exploratory studies to support a potential Formula 1 program. With the focus on new programs, work will include the development of vehicle, track, and competitor characterization methods and measures. This position is open to international hires.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate with GM supported teams and GM personnel to understand team objectives, participate in a coordinated effort, and convey findings.

Continuously strive to improve GM Motorsports programs’ analysis methods and vehicle dynamics understanding by:

  • Reimagining new and better solutions to common problems or questions

  • Staying informed of latest industry advances

  • Drawing on math, physics, vehicle dynamics, and data science methods to develop new performance measures to characterize vehicle handling, performance, and potential

  • Prototyping new ideas and validating these against track and test data

  • Working with GM Software team to develop solutions in our production tools

  • Partnering with group Performance Engineers to implement solutions into a standard analysis procedure

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related subject

  • 5+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC, or similar

  • 3+ years of experience in F1

  • Intimate knowledge of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including both offline simulation and the DIL simulator.  Experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance

  • Proficient programing in python, MATLAB, or similar language

  • Extensive experience analyzing on-track performance through both application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods

  • Strong organization skills, forward thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with exceptional work ethic and integrity

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related subject

  • Race Engineering experience in a F1 program with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy

  • Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar

  • Knowledge and experience in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation

  • Experience with aerodynamic testing and applying physical and/or CFD results to vehicle modeling tools for on-track performance optimization

  • Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post.

  • Experience developing multi-body simulation models in Dymola/Modelica
