Vehicle Dynamics Student Placement (2024/25)

For many fans of Formula One, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern F1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists. Much of our success is thanks to the diversity of thought and spectrum of skill sets held within the team, our ability to recognise unique contributions from individual team members is just a part of why we love what we do.

Job Description

Red Bull Technology are inviting candidates to apply for Industrial Student Placement positions within Vehicle Performance Group. There are three positions available: Suspension, Simulation, and Tyres.

The positions are targeted towards Mechanical, Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering students. Candidates will require excellent mathematical and analytical skills and an engineering background. Knowledge of vehicle dynamic principles and experience with Matlab would also be advantageous.

The successful candidate will develop skills in problem solving, creativity, teamwork, planning, innovation, and communication. Each position will have a different specialisation, but all positions will require working closely with the rest of the Vehicle Dynamics group, as well as the wider business (including Red Bull Powertrains), and they will all likely involve the following tasks:

  • Validating models against track data and developing our models to reduce errors.
  • Providing predictive performance analysis prior to each event, and longer-term goals like future car concepts.
  • Supporting real-time and ad-hoc data analysis of race and test events.
  • Develop automated routines and processes for data analysis and metrics generation to improve our efficiency.
  • Develop design-of-experiments using existing toolsets to explore the design space.
  • Improve the visualisation of data so that the wider company can quickly and accurately understand our conclusions.

The typical workflow will differ depending on the time of year. The Vehicle Dynamics group is very tightly linked to the race calendar and during the season there will be a strong bias towards preparing for the upcoming events and analysing recent events. During the offseason, projects will switch towards longer term work, and successful applicants should expect larger, more complicated projects which lay the foundation for future successes in years to come.

The placement will be for 1 year, starting in the summer of 2024. To be considered for this Student Placement, please apply to this advert and submit both your CV and a one-page Cover Letter.

Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to complete your student placement at our championship winning team, but it is also a great opportunity to work with some of the greatest talents in F1. A good salary is just the start, there are many other benefits too, such as a free daily food allowance, free gym access and fitness classes, multiple discounts and offers with our partners, free barista style coffee, unlimited Red Bull and much more!

Application closing date 23:59 (BST) 6th October 2023.
