Formula E is making huge steps to improve female participation in motorsports as well as increasing gender equality. But some may ask how? Well it all started with Susie Wolff former CEO of ROKiT Venturi Racing (now Maserati MSG Formula E Team)

In 2016 Wolff set up Dare To Be Different; a female motorsport initiative with a mission to promote females into all aspects of the male dominated industry. Three years later in 2019, Dare To Be Different teamed up with both Formula E and the FIA to form the Girls on Track initiative.

The first Girls on Track event was held at the beginning of season six and proved to be a huge success. Two more events were held throughout the season and the initiative has carried on ever since.

What do the events entail?

On average the events cater to 150 girls. Over the day the girls take part in many different activities to explore all the different areas of motorsport. Season eight’s events included eKarting, simulator challenges, garage tours, pitstop practice, robot building as well as watching the cars out on track. During their time at the circuit the girls also have chance to speak to the females already working in the paddock, providing both a role model and the opportunity to ask questions.

Who can get involved?

The Girls on Track events are held all over the world throughout the Formula E season. They are aimed at girls between 8-18 from all backgrounds and no previous motorsport experience is required. The events aim to empower females and showcase what opportunities are available from being a driver to becoming a journalist or even an engineer.

Speaking to Formula E, Susie commented on the programme saying; “We want to inspire the next generation of young girls who want to create opportunity within the sport and make sure that they’re supported through role models and mentoring.”

Formula E is providing an influential programme to inspire the next generation of females in motorsport and is something more race series should explore! The scheme is also very well endorsed by teams up and down the paddock with Nio333 Formula E Team even running the logo on their cars.

Susie Wolff may not be in the paddock for Season Nine however it’s certain her impact will remain in the up and coming female talent.
