Purpose of Role

Technical and delivery responsibility for suspension links, Uprights and Wheels across all Automotive projects.  Subject matter expert for suspension components.

Principal Accountabilities

  • With the attribute and chief engineers, lead the target setting, design and development of components and systems to ensure optimised vehicle performance and delivery of vehicle attributes, leading from concept through to validation.
  • Subject matter expertise of wheels and suspension links.
  • Identification of new technologies and suppliers for implementation of future projects and platforms in support of attribute roadmap. 
  • BOM definition and management including cost reduction initiatives to deliver Function Group BOM glide path targets, and leading weight reduction initiatives.
  • Planning, monitoring and control of function group activities to guarantee project delivery in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process)
  • Establish and control system and component, design, release, development and validation plans in line with technical risk management processes.
  • Establish and control supply chain in association with function group buyers to ensure delivery of components and systems on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
  • Ensure manufacturability and compliance with quality standards of all components and systems within the defined BOM through interface with manufacturing site and suppliers.
  • Direct problem resolution teams to manage engineering concerns and attribute compromises.
  • Lead DFMEA activity to find improvement to McLaren development methodology and mitigate risk.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience of OEM Chassis design experience in Automotive industry, ideally with compliant mounting componentry
  • Experience of automotive vehicle design and development, understanding of vehicle attributes and target setting
  • Good mechanical design principles, capable to deliver design solutions
  • Accurate organisation and project management skills
  • Proven experience in component release management and problem solving
  • Proven capability working manufacturing processes such as aluminium casting/forging technology and natural rubber moulding,
  • Experience of high and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes
  • An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for measured success.
  • Use of CAD (Catia V5) advantageous
