Prototype Build Engineer

Purpose of Role

This engineering role is responsible for the delivery of a project’s early prototype build phase to agreed cost, quality, and timing.

The role is required to liaise with the design engineering and wider vehicle development teams to support the definition and publication of vehicle functional requirements. They will subsequently plan and execute the end-to-end prototype build process. This encompasses procurement to vehicle audit and customer handover. Build phases include all Pre-VP activity.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manage the builds in-line with the defined high-level plan.
  • Deliver agreed vehicle specifications to support required DVP activities.
  • Monitor, track and report on spending throughout the builds.
  • Progress and status reports to be communicated to the Principal/Senior Build Engineer.
  • Work with business processes & resolve issues within engineering when they arise, driving continuous improvement.
  • Management of engineering change control ensuring deviations from functional requirement are agreed and documented.
  • Liaise with the procurement team to ensure timely delivery of parts.
  • Responsible for reporting build issues and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Management of build documentation for customer handover, including vehicle data uploads to the online system.
  • Lead the commissioning, dynamic sign-off and handover of involved builds in-line with the McLaren Mule Build Process.
  • Maintain and endorse McLaren values and culture including housekeeping, appearance and behaviours.
  • Actively contribute to a safe working environment, engaging with relevant SSoW and H&S policies.
  • Support the engineering team to achieve the team goals

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Ideally some experience of development programme delivery, preferably gained on low volume, high performance vehicle programmes.
  • Experience in operating CAD based systems for virtual build analysis, preferably CATIA.
  • Knowledge and experience of a broad range of vehicle and rig data acquisition, test and analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience of vehicle fundamentals
  • Excellent IT skills and proficient with MS Office products.
  • Practical work experience within the automotive industry is preferred

Business Knowledge

  • Experience in an automotive test and development environment preferred
  • Low volume, high performance vehicle programs
  • Hybrid/Electric Drive engineering
  • Understanding of build management tools and approach

Essential Functional / Technical Skills

  • Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above with a robust grasp of engineering theory.
