General Role Overview

The Manager, Prototype is responsible for leading overall planning and delivery of our prototype vehicles prior to vehicle launch.  The Manager will lead the overall process of definition, requirements, build process / location, and functional delivery of prototype vehicles to engineering teams for test and validation activities.  The Manager will also lead the coordination among engineering, purchasing, logistics, and testing teams to ensure alignment and close tracking of all prototype build activities, asset usage, and further life planning.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the process to define the technical requirements for prototype vehicles, partial vehicles, and related testing assets at each development stage for multiple vehicle programs.

  • Create build requirements, Statement of Work (SOW), budget, and quality expectations to negotiate prototype build activities with external 3rd party vendors and suppliers.

  • Manage and develop the build master timing document and coordinate the related activities to deliver HW and SW to ensure the build readiness and completion on-time.

  • Manage prototype vehicle parts specifications and requirements from design and engineering teams and work with partners to define and track part-level BOM and quantities of parts needed.

  • Effectively manage timeline and resources needed for on-time program and asset delivery.

  • Support the tracking of all assets required for prototype builds with the procurement and engineering teams and lead cross-functional plans to keep build timing and content requirements.

  • Manage the timeline for vehicle builds and delivery by cooperating with the inside and outside prototype production, manufacturing, and engineering teams responsible for each build step.

  • Optimize the build-up and delivery process for prototype vehicles and implement solutions to reduce the timeline from definition to delivery of each vehicle.

  • Plan, manage, and track the overall prototype vehicle budget for each vehicle program to deliver the quantities and requirements defined by engineering and testing teams.

  • Track the parts delivery to critical build dates and follow-up with procurement and suppliers as necessary to ensure timely delivery and logistics planning.

  • Hold recurring meetings with cross collaborative teams and external partners to communicate build status and continuously define next steps.

  • Work closely with all stakeholders and external engineering partners to clearly communicate all activities required to develop prototype vehicles.

  • Manage the requirements, progress, and coordination required for the prototype fleet startup, commissioning, and fit-for-test assessment post build.

  • Lead efforts to keep the prototype fleet SW and HW updated and any required retrofit activities and support.

  • Track the overall usage, uptime, location, user, and status of the entire prototype vehicle fleet and report regularly on the status to management.

  • Support the engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams with build concerns and investigation to root cause with design, engineering, suppliers, and production teams.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.  Master of Science is preferred.

  • 10 years of experience in Automotive prototyping, manufacturing, testing, or engineering in a similar technical field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Competencies

  • Experience working closely with multiple functions of product delivery (Purchasing, Engineering, Design, etc.) to manage the prototype delivery.

  • Experience as an Engineer in Automotive or a related product area.

  • Previous history of managing and building prototype vehicles, parts, and/or systems.

  • Knowledge of prototype vehicle build vendors, suppliers, locations, and capabilities.

  • Ability to manage and track multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and presentation skills at all levels of the enterprise.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to manage and track multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously.

  • Proficient in JIRA / Confluence and PLM systems.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally, as required.
