Racing Hybrid Propulsion System Project & Track Support Engineer

Job Description

Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Pontiac, MI on a full-time basis.

The Role

We are seeking a Project and Track Support Engineer to support hybrid propulsion system activities within GM's exciting Cadillac LMDh sports car racing program! In this position you will play a key role in developing and implementing propulsion performance solutions to assist our partner teams in their success on the track. Your creativity, initiative, and high level of independent judgment are key to your success. In addition to GM on-site development activities, this role requires frequent domestic and/or international travel to support testing and race event weekends.

What You'll Do

In the Lab 

  • Ensure compliance with GM High Voltage training and safety requirements during all hybrid system work with all involved parties

  • Assist in hybrid system and driveline inspection, assembly, installation and operation during dyno development and validation testing

  • Specification, setup, issue resolution, data analysis, and results reporting for dyno development tests to optimize hybrid system contribution to overall vehicle performance

  • Calibration and software development for hybrid system controls. Preparation of software requirements documents for requested changes

  • Assist GM Motorsports in working groups with competitor OEMs and hybrid partners. Support execution of action items stemming from these workgroups

  • Contribute to, and supervise others during, initial hybrid system component builds and commissioning

  • Develop and maintain up-to-date hybrid system documentation for team access including both Cadillac-specific and partner-sourced documents

  • Contribute to major hybrid system part order planning, usage tracking, and documentation

  • Occasional weekday or weekend off-shift support should be expected to meet the needs of the program and to work around the schedule of high-demand test facilities

Trackside

  • Monitor vehicle hybrid controls and high voltage systems during track events. Ensure mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems performs as expected

  • Perform system checks and troubleshoot communications and CAN issues

  • Review logged vehicle data to monitor and communicate issues and potential performance enhancements, with focus on hybrid system utilization

  • Participate in debriefing sessions with other propulsion and race team members to confirm issues, propose advancements, and prioritize follow-up activities

  • Collaborate with vehicle engineers providing calibration of hybrid torque control functions

  • Create daily report summarizing hybrid system issues and hybrid calibration work completed across the Cadillac fleet

  • Document hybrid system software and calibration revision levels

  • Execute hybrid system commissioning and decommissioning work and complete/maintain appropriate documentation

  • Ensure compliance with all sanctioning body regulations pertinent to the hybrid system during all sanctioned events

  • Compile and present hybrid system data to GM Motorsports or team leadership for presentation to sanctioning bodies when requested

  • Act as liaison with hybrid partner trackside support engineers as required for hybrid system issue resolution and component inspections

  • Prepare High Voltage batteries for storage and transit per supplier documentation

  • Serve as the Cadillac OEM High Voltage Safety Officer during race events; Act as liaison with the series on all matters pertaining to OEM HV Safety

  • Oversee Cadillac race team HV safety behaviors and compliance with sanctioning body regulations

  • Lead all HV Safety activities, including track marshal briefing, response vehicle preparation, and HV incident response at private tests where sanctioning body support is not available

What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree (Electrical preferred but not required)

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of electrification mechanical, electrical, and control systems

  • 2 - 5 years working cohesively with engineers, designers, technicians, or other partners in a high performing team environment

  • Experience with High Voltage Electrified Propulsion system hardware and associated controls

  • Powertrain calibration and controls knowledge: PID tuning; Torque-based controls strategy

  • Comfortable making informed decisions under high pressure and with limited time

  • Proficiency in reading and interpretation of MATLAB Simulink models

  • Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate and communicate with varying levels of internal and external key partners

  • Exceptional work ethic and integrity

  • Frequent domestic and/or international travel to support testing and race event weekends

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Prior motorsports experience performing propulsion development and track-side support Collegiate programs such as Formula SAE, EcoCAR, or personal hobby engagement are considered acceptable experience

  • Experience using high level dyno systems, hardware, and software (e.g., AVL PUMA Open, IndiCom, Concerto and ETAS INCA systems)

  • High level knowledge of industrial and mil-spec wiring systems & hardware (e.g. Deutsch and Amphenol)

  • Powertrain calibration and controls knowledge: PID tuning; Torque-based controls strategy; Gearbox shifting calibration
