Aerodynamics Industrial Placement
Brackley, UK
At The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team we are a team of passionate and enthusiastic people who work together to design and develop the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.
Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.
Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.
About the Role:
Working collaboratively as part of a small group, you will apply your thoughtful and inquisitive nature to exciting projects that improve the aerodynamic performance of our car, enhance our tools and methodologies, or solve problems relating to fluid flow for our customer projects.
Depending on your specific placement within the Aerodynamics Department, you could find yourself testing in our on-site wind tunnel, evaluating different concepts with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), modelling your ideas using Computer-Aided Design (CAD), or applying your programming skills to develop new analysis tools.
As a placement student with us you will enjoy the same responsibilities and creative freedoms as our full-time employees and will make a very real contribution to the performance of our Team.
Supported and mentored by experienced engineers, you will see your skills develop over your time with us. You will return to university to complete your studies having enjoyed an experience that helped you grow as an engineer.
Please note that the role is office-based, at our campus in Brackley, United Kingdom.
Successful candidates will have:
You have a passion for aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics or fluid motion and are excited about the opportunity to develop your skills by applying your curious nature to stimulating projects.
You have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies, and will have at least one year of academic studies left (undergraduate or postgraduate) at the time of taking up your placement with us in July 2025.
Your commitment and diligence have yielded good university results and you have a good appreciation of the basics of aerodynamics.
You can demonstrate how your experiences (eg academic, extra-curricular, work, life experiences) reflect your values. Our shared values are Passion, Respect, Innovation, Determination, Excellence.
With a broad overview of your subject and an open and honest communication style, you relish collaborating in a team setting and enjoy discussing technical concepts. You are equally comfortable working on your own: applying your reflective nature, interpretive skills, attention to detail and dependable judgment to understand complicated engineering problems then propose and evaluate viable solutions in a timely fashion.
A prior interest in motorsport is not required: we are more interested in your potential to apply your aerodynamic skills and understanding to practical engineering challenges.
Skills you could gain from your placement include:
-
Understanding aerodynamics and fluid flow structures, connecting theory to practice
-
Creating innovative solutions to problems, eg developing aero concepts or improving CFD correlation
-
Interpreting data, eg results from our state-of-the-art aerodynamic facilities
-
Developing tools and methodologies, eg writing programs in Python or MATLAB
-
Designing surfaces and components in CAD
-
Planning and performing test programmes, eg in the wind-tunnel or in CFD
