Work Experience 2021

As part of our on-going commitment to developing the best emerging talent, we are proud to advertise places on our exciting Work Experience programme for 2021. The purpose of work experience is to raise awareness of the role within engineering, and to encourage young people to explore roles within engineering and the wider STEM industry. Our aim is to bring engineering and business subjects to life, enthuse students about the options out there, and help to equip them for their future careers, particularly in a precision engineering environment such as ours.

We receive a considerable amount of applications and due to such high demand, paired with limited availability due to our team size, resources and racing commitments, we are only able to accommodate a limited number of students each year.

In 2021 we will be looking to offer a ‘virtual Taster’ experience and if restrictions allow there will be limited spaces available to hold work experience onsite but this is to be confirmed nearer the time.

Alongside the Work Experience Programme, we run a “Taster Week”, also known as “Five days in the life of Williams” and can accommodate 10 students and depending on restrictions this too could be held ‘virtually’ instead of being onsite. This week is designed to provide an insight into the diverse range of skills and occupations required to produce a Formula One racing car. It is designed to assist students in choosing the right career path, apprenticeship and/or future subject choices. Taster Week takes place in July each year (dates tbc once the race calendar is finalised).

Due to our car-build commitments, Work Experience is not available between October and April each year. Additionally, we are not able to accommodate Work Experience students for periods of longer than one-week.
Work Experience can be held in departments such as Composites, Hydraulics, Model Shop and Prototype and Test (dependant on COVID-restrictions). We are unfortunately unable to offer any work experience in our Race/Support, Design Office or Marketing.

Application Process: when short-listing Work Experience and Taster Week applications we would expect students to be studying relevant subjects, and to have achieved strong academic results in Maths, English, Science, Art, Design and Mechanical. Active participation in programmes such as F1 in Schools or Formula Student is an advantage as is evidence of interest in leisure activities such as go-karting, restoring or working on cars, building working models of cars and planes.

The closing date for all Work Experience and Taster Week applications is Friday 8th January 2021. Shortlisting will take place between January and March 2021 and those students shortlisted will be contacted to advise of next steps. All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of March 2021. This timeline takes into account our busy car-build period and pre-season preparation.
