Tyre Modelling Engineer

Extracting maximum performance from the tyres is one of the key elements of being successful in Formula 1 and is the primary objective of this role.  The successful applicant will work with other members of the tyre group to refine our understanding of the tyres’ characteristics and to ensure we design and operate a car that takes full advantage of them.

Doing this involves a broad range of activities ranging from hands on direction of tyre related activities at the track to contributing to the development of advanced tyre models and analysis techniques in the factory.

We are therefore looking for an engineer who approaches problems with a rigorous analytical approach whilst being capable of making decisions quickly in the high pressure environment of a race weekend.  They will ideally be able to demonstrate experience of doing this in the field of racing tyre performance.

The role:

As a member of the tyre group you will be involved in:

  • Development and parameterisation of models to capture key tyre characteristics.
  • Analysis of rig and track tests results to extract these behaviours accurately.
  • Exploitation of these models (including in the simulator) to optimise car design and setup.
  • Directing tyre exploitation activities at the track, ensuring we operate the tyres in their optimal condition throughout the race weekend.

The successful candidate:

  • Educated to Masters level in Engineering or related discipline
  • Experienced in the development and application of advanced tyre models.
  • Experienced in the domain of tyre engineering, ideally in a racing environment.
  • Ideally has wider experience of Vehicle Dynamics and the optimisation of combined vehicle and tyre performance.
  • Comfortable in working both in a methodical, analytical role and a more R&D focussed role, developing and coding models and analysis methods.
  • Capable of quickly integrating and working effectively in a team whilst also being happy to take the lead and direct activities related to tyres in a high pressure environment.
