Test Engineer III

Position Summary:

The Test Engineer is responsible for executing and ensuring the on-time development of reliable transmissions tests, which ensure new or modified products are able to be manufactured, meet customer specifications, and maintain company standards, in addition to serving as a technical liaison for test activities in order to support internal and external customers. Works on multiple complex projects requiring innovative.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform test engineering and related analysis as required to support internal and external customers.

  • Execute all test activities including the definition of test plans, test procedures, and work orders for lab technicians.

  • Develop complex tests to analyze/assess the effect of software release on hardware and hardware releases during production and application approval process.

  • Develop complex test plans, procedures, work instructions from customer requirements DVP&Rs, and FMEAs.

  • Setup, configure, and operate test setups, fixtures, and instrumentation as required by test plans, test standards, and customer instructions.

  • Design test fixtures as required per customer requirements, test plan, and test standards; validate test and product designs accordingly.

  • Implement and deploy test fixtures, testing apparatuses and machines.

  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of issues in transmissions.

  • Lead assembly and handling of prototype transmissions.

  • Work with ZF engineering teams (program management, design, control and resident) and departments within global R&D.

  • Plans multiple projects simultaneously. Estimates, tracks & completes project on time and within budget.

  • Leads technical group of engineers\project and provides technical guidance to group.

  • Works mostly independently with minimal supervision.

  • Able to effectively train people outside his/her work group.

  • Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams. Can write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.

  • Extensive Interaction with customers

  • Follow the design procedures and specifications established by division R&D.

  • Ensure completion of all 8-Ds for testing-development issues.

  • Participate in continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, formal training, reviewing professional publications, establishing and expanding professional networks, and participating in professional societies.

  • Ensure departmental compliance with all TS16949 policies and procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in testing within a powertrain and/or related area.
  • Strong Functional/Product Knowledge, ability to train others

  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Performs a variety of complicated tasks.

  • Ability to lead project(s)

  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

  • Working knowledge of measurement techniques, hydraulics, and vehicle testing techniques.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software

  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems, data analysis, and data processing

  • Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities

  • Superior interpersonal, communications and listening skills

  • Excellent English language competency

  • Ability/willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (up to 25%)

Preferred Skills and experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience with automatic transmission technology
  • 1+ years of managing/directing others in addition to delegating/tracking independent work assignments and training programs
  • Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma problem-solving methodology
  • Familiarity with plant operations, including machining, assembly and heat treatment
  • IATF16949 awareness training
  • Experience in Automotive industry
  • Spanish and/or German Language Skills
