Summary of the Role:
The main purpose of the role as Test Engineer is to prepare, coordinate and support experiments and R&D projects on different test rigs at MTC or external facilities. Beyond this, continuous improvement of the system layout, operational processes and data processing is a core responsibility.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Prepare and support experiments on various test rigs and dynos technically and operationally
- Provide technical support to the PU, transmission, systems, aerodynamics, vehicle performance, and trackside operations groups with focus on smooth rig operation and interpretation of results
- Identify areas within MRL where dyno and rig activities can have a direct impact on lap time and facilitate the process to trackside delivery
- Liaise between the engineering and production teams of MRL as well as external suppliers
- Take ownership of maintaining electronic and software systems required for completion of experiments including data processing and analysis
- Analyse existing rig layout and processes and suggest improvements
- Communicate results and liaise between different departments and external suppliers
- Fault logging, reporting and development of short and long-term solutions
- Create test result reports matching McLaren standards
- Guide decision making through well prepared reports and high level technical summaries
- Preparation of comprehensive documentation and training of other staff
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Background in operation of machinery and safety critical equipment
- In depth knowledge and experience with PC software and data logging systems
- Hands on experience in assembly, maintenance and repair of electromechanical systems
- Excellent skills in writing to prepare high quality documentation as well as test reports
- Comfortable with data processing and analysis
- Basic CAD skills to manage assemblies and installations desirable
- Previous experience in working with rigs and dynos or in a testing environment advantageous
- Understanding of race car design and electronic systems and their impact on reliability and safety in operation is beneficial
- Ability to create and repair electric wiring is useful
- Willingness and ability to travel as required in support of testing abroad
