Test and Development Machinist

A new vacancy has arisen for a Machinist working within the Test and Development Department. Reporting to a Test & Development Production Co-ordinator, the Machinist will be responsible for setting and operating manual turning and NC milling operations to produce a wide range of components for our test programs for both our F1 and applied science activities. This is a particularly exciting position, as it offers the opportunity to widen your skill set within the lab testing environment and will include contributing to the development of our apprentice in the future.

Also you would be expected to look after material stock levels and the machine shop gauge calibrations.

 

Key Accountabilities/Duties include:

  • Setting and operating manual and NC milling machine.

  • Setting and operating our Harrison M300 manual Lathe & XYZ NC Mill.

  • Knowledge of setting and operating Jones and Shipman cylindrical and surface grinding machines would be an advantageous.

  • Providing clear, effective communication throughout the lab and design team.

  • Maximising throughput and overall machine tool efficiency.

  • Ensuring that appropriate process and procedures are adhered to throughout manufacture in order to maintain high quality.

  • Dynamic and capable meeting challenging deadlines within a fast paced environment.

  • Able to read & interpret component and assembly drawings to assemble rigs and fixtures.

  • Able to read and interpret parts lists to raise parts requests and Material stock orders.

  • Working knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office.

  • Must possess a continuous improvement mind-set and be able to create a positive profile for themselves and the department.

Potential development:

  • Opportunity to widen skillset by working in the lab testing environment. This will start with test assembly and test support.

  • This could progress to test ownership and responsibility on single axis machines.

  • Future development (depending on ability and progress) could include multi-axis testing.

  • There could also be the opportunity for CAD training and fixture design.

Candidate Profile:

 

Having served a recognised apprenticeship and holding the relevant qualifications, the successful candidate will have a proven background of setting and operating manual machine tools, specifically milling, turning and grinding machines.

 

You will possess effective communication skills and will have the ability to remain focused and objective under pressure. You will be able to demonstrate a process mind-set with the capability for logically solving complex problems.  Resilient and professional with a belief in the concept of continuous improvement.  Energetic with a strong work ethic and customer focus.

 

Basic experience of CAD/CAM software would be advantageous.

 

Flexibility in hours and a can-do approach is required, along with the ability to work in a team, under pressure and to strict deadlines with minimum supervision.
