Software Product Designer

The Romax suite of software is core to our business. Our tools are world leading because they are rooted in the practical engineering work that we do ourselves for customers, either in the Design, Regional Consultancy or Innovation & Research teams. The Consulting Centre of Excellence (CoE) team bridges between Software and these Engineering teams pulling in, real experience and using this to help meet the requirements of our software customers. An understanding of both sides is crucial.

A new role has been created in our Consulting Centre of Excellence for a Software Product Designer. Could this be your next career move? If so please apply now.

Role:

Working closely with the Product Management and Software Development Teams, the Product Designers specify the function, look and user experience of the software. Working at Romax normally involves some cross over between teams as it keeps us flexible, but generally the tasks will be:

  • Own the user experience of a feature or tool
  • Create user workflows, defining how customers do and might use the tools (this includes discussing with the customer)
  • Create user story maps, defining how tools can be built up in stages
  • Provide insights to Product Management around users current and future technical needs
  • UI design and mock-up
  • Run test and feedback demos with customer
  • Define acceptance criteria
  • Own training and tutorials, examples files
  • Own technical cases studies (demonstrating software function)
  • Technical sign-off
  • Support Software Development & resolve issues
  • For clarity, Product Designers DONT do:
    • Writing software code (that’s Software Development)
    • Just UI/UX (there’s a bit of this, but its not the main focus)
    • Inventing tools or methods (that’s Engineering, Software Dev, Research)
    • Commercial prioritisation of software projects (that Product Management)

Candidate:

Because our software users are usually engineers, this role normally suits someone with an engineering background because they need to empathise with the users in order to create a world-class experience.

  • Engineering/physics technical degree
  • Experience using professional engineering tools an advantage, but not essential (as it gives you a users viewpoint)
  • Problem solving ability
  • High technical cognition & reasoning (can you cut down to the core of what is needed?)
  • Knowledge of agile software development helpful, but not necessary (you will need to pick up a lot of complex topics anyway)
