PURPOSE:

An INDYCAR Competition Software Engineering internship is a paid position and is designed to provide an individual with real-world experience in development and testing of custom, specialized applications. This role will participate in various software efforts, which can include traveling to various events where the role will monitor programs used in conducting a racing event. Individuals will be immersed in a variety of activities across all areas of INDYCAR including Timing and Scoring, Race Control, Engineering, and Public Relations/Marketing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, test, and maintain efficient, productive and scalable applications and solutions for INDYCAR Timing and Scoring, Race Control, and Engineering.
  • Work with Public Relations / Marketing to build reports using database archives.
  • Assist in maintaining statistical models and applications using timing, telemetry and social data for use with various departments.
  • Assist in development and implementation of next generation of timing systems, helping shape the future in professional motorsports.
  • Work closely with INDYCAR teams to develop and enhance existing solutions and applications including timing, telemetry and on-car solutions.
  • Setup and maintain timing systems during race and test events.
  • Perform “second-level” analysis on datasets to help efficiently and accurately officiate racing events.
  • Assist in support of all phases of software development life cycle with a heavy emphasis on testing and production support.
  • Create internally facing mobile applications for monitoring sub-systems. Includes both Android and iOS.
  • Other duties within Competition Department, as assigned by the INDYCAR Software Lead.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a four-year College/University.
  • Technical Skills Required:
    • Proficient in .Net, Database, and Object-Oriented Development
    • SQL Server – Transact SQL, Stored Procedures, Functions, SQL Reporting Services.
    • Microsoft Visual Studio / Visual C#.
    • Mobile App Development in both Android and iOS.
  • Technical Skills Preferred:
    • Knowledge in scripting languages such as Python or R.
    • Microsoft Sharepoint / Active Directory
    • XMPP Communication
    • Experience with MongoDB
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to handle pressure.
  • Effective communication and relationship building skills.
  • Highly motivated and resourceful self-starter with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in establishing priorities and managing details. Manage multiple tasks and requests effectively.
  • High integrity and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Professional Motorsports, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar Series and other related activities.
  • Passionate about sports, motorsports and/or sports analytics.
  • Flexibility of work schedule to support the Competition staff as required.

WORK HOURS:

Must be available to work a minimum of 3-4 shifts, approximately 20 hours total, during the work week and must have 100% availability during event times, including travel to select race events during the INDYCAR racing season:

  • Must be available to work weekends
  • Must have a flexible schedule
  • Must be willing to work unusual hours
