Site Reliability Engineer

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

 

The Team has set a new benchmark for Formula One success during the sport’s current Hybrid era, winning consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the Constructors’ Championship in 2021.

 

The role

 

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Site Reliability Engineer to join our Information Technology team. This role covers a broad cross section of disciplines and offers a chance to work closely with others to improve the value of critical and widely used systems and platforms with practices that will make a real difference to the team.

The successful candidate will bring a wide range of experience and skills and be able to combine them with a high attention to detail and determination to solve complex problems while also bringing improvements to systems and processes.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Contributing to enhancements to the reliability and efficiency of complex enterprise systems, delivering maximum value to the business while reducing operational overhead.

  • Collectively ensuring platforms are appropriately equipped for scale, with cross-functional and multi-tenant capability where appropriate.

  • Ensuring all systems and platforms have the appropriate instrumentation to provide full visibility of the estate and its performance, enabling proactive identification of future failures.

  • Employing industry and innovative practices and standards, adhering to established processes around ITSM disciplines such as change and risk management, while improving maturity and evolving them to be more aligned to rapid and friction free working.

  • Performing in-depth assessments and documentation of systems and platforms to align to standard support models and injecting or undertaking process and improvement work into legacy systems that are already online.

  • Collaboration with the architecture group and Service Portfolio Management inputs for projects or systems, ensuring alignment to business needs and requirements and established processes.

  • Automating day-to-day operational tasks and challenges around service provisioning and maintenance, focussing on infrastructure as code and providing self-service capabilities for everyone while working to deliver new capabilities, enhance performance, capacity etc.

  • Contributing and appropriately taking responsibility for critical/on-call response to major incidents and failures, identifying issues proactively or during break-fix, restoring service and analysing these incidents for root cause to learn from failures, while improving the resilience of services on a continuous improvement basis.

  • Integrating disparate silos of systems and data to work together for maximum value and reduced manual effort/duplication of data by leveraging Service Oriented Architecture.

  • Ensuring appropriate disaster recovery requirements are planned for and reviewed as part of all implementations during the evolution of products and services.

  • Documenting and sharing experiences/educating other members of the department, to raise the overall level of systems knowledge and overall support capability.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Datacentre, Infrastructure, Application and Data Management experience gained in an enterprise environment and accrross a wide range of vendors and technologies.

  • Experience of major application problem solving, implementations, upgrades, or improvement projects, including ERP (SAP), PLM (Dassault Systèmes), and other business areas.

  • Experience of delivering solutions using a mix of on-premises, hybrid and cloud infrastructure models using SaaS, PaaS and IaaS.

  • Working knowledge of Cloud services (Azure) and authentication methods using OIDC and SAMLv2

  • Experience of providing integration and interoperability between cross platform systems.

  • System administration experience with various technology stacks (Kubernetes, ) across Windows and Linux systems, including detailed experience of doing so with code (PowerShell, Python).

  • A broad understanding of current new and innovative technologies and the opportunities they provide to enhance our service offerings.

  • Experience of DevOps and Agile methodologies for day-to-day tasks and project management.

  • Experience of build, release, and deployment tooling, including knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, Terraform).
