Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Aerodynamics)

As part of this team we have a position within our Aerodynamics Design Office as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Aerodynamics department) – The Role
Working in the Engineering section of our Aerodynamics Design Office, primary responsibilities will be to undertake the scheming and detailing of mechanical systems and components.  The systems and components will be directly related to either the Wind Tunnel Model, Wind Tunnel Sub Systems, Aero Measurement devices. Duties will also include detailing any necessary manufacturing/assembly tooling, jigs or testing fixtures.

The aim is to improve the experiment and general this means improving;

    • Correlation
    • Reliability
    • Speeding up the process
    • Adding functionality

The typical areas that you be working can include but not limited to are;

  • Wind Tunnel Model
    • WT model spine, suspension, steering, balances, motion systems, electrical packaging, etc. 
  • Wind Tunnel
    • All areas are opportunities for development if justifiable.
  • Aero Measurement systems
    • Aero instrumentation, rakes, yaw probes, Kiel probes, calibration tools etc.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Aerodynamics department) – The Person As a senior design position we have high expectations of a candidate’s engineering abilities and in particular candidates must have or be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Mechanical, automotive engineering degree or equivalent.
  • Design experience working in F1 or top level motorsport or alternatively within an equivalent high level engineering industry.
  • Good knowledge of complex mechanical engineering.
  • Ideally have design experience in regards to at least one of the following types of automation;
    • Electrical
    • Pneumatic
    • Hydraulic
  • Excellent CAD skills are required (preferably Catia V5).
  • Use of analysis tools such as FEA, Kinematics (ideally with Catia V5).
  • Produce engineering drawings to BS 8888 with good understanding of GD&T.
  • Organised demonstrating the ability to manage the work schedule effectively and also efficiently to maintain the demanding design deadlines.
  • A proven and pro-active fault implementation approach.
  • The ability to check junior designer drawings before release and steer less experienced staff whilst working under their own projects.
  • A track record of high standards/ownership for all aspects of work delivered.
