Senior Electronics Engineer

The position will support development of prototype and concept vehicles, with a strong focus on vehicle electrification, autonomous vehicles and unmanned vehicle platforms. Primary customers support the advanced automotive and defense industries. An open mind to new challenges and a desire to constantly learn is a must for any candidate. Pratt Miller is looking for highly talented candidates to lead vehicle electronics architecture design, development and integration. The following section describes the skills that are valuable for the types of projects awarded to our group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following items:

  • Vehicle Electrical Architecture
    • Develop vehicle integration strategy for electrical systems
    • Define architecture for power generation, management, and storage
    • Define CAN architecture and integrate vehicle communication systems
    • Communicate wiring and connector requirements to support harness builds
  • System Hardware Specification
    • Follow MIL-STD for vehicle electrical systems and wiring
    • Research, select, and source sensors, actuators, motors, energy storage, and other hardware
    • Communicate mechanical requirements of system to project design staff
    • Identify controller hardware to meet I/O and computational requirements
    • Design wiring harness and work with electrical lab to build harnesses
  • System Integration and Testing
    • Lead overall electrical system build and integration into vehicle
    • Interface with suppliers to ensure performance and timing expectations are met
    • Troubleshoot electrical issues ranging from harnessing to controller states
    • Process and analyze performance and test data
    • Provide analysis, insight, and feedback for development
  • Software Development
    • Develop and support algorithm development in Simulink using a rapid prototype environment
    • Integration and build of prototype systems in development vehicles
    • Software calibration and validation in test vehicles

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, tasks relating to the following areas will be assigned as required.

  • Interaction with current & potential customers regarding Pratt & Miller systems
  • Planning & program management on internal and customer projects

  • Provide feedback on product needs, processes and future training
  • The candidate must be able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Desired Education and Training

  • BS or MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

Desired Knowledge and Skills:

  • Vehicle electronics architecture and system design experience
    • High voltage systems, such as electric or hybrid vehicle powertrains
    • Mechatronic component selection
    • Actuators (brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, traction motors/gen-sets)
    • Energy storage (batteries, hydraulic accumulators)
    • Sensor selection for robust control
  • Wire harness schematic design, layout and hands-on build experience
    • Mentor Graphics VeSys Design/ VeSys Harness, PTC Creo Cabling, Visio
    • Able to work well with electronic build technicians
  • Vehicle and system troubleshooting experience
  • Experience identifying controller hardware
    • System ECUs
    • Motor controllers
  • Data acquisition hardware selection and analysis experience

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of automotive, defense or motorsports industries
    • Electric and hybrid vehicle experience
    • Autonomous, by-wire systems or vehicle robotics exposure
  • Rapid Prototype Software Development Tools for Embedded Systems
    • MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow
    • Motohawk/Raptor
    • dSPACE MABX
    • Vector CANape/CANalyzer
  • Communication protocols (CAN, LIN, RS485, SPI, Wireless 802.11, DSRC)

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Office Environment
  • Travel up to 10%
