Senior Electrical Machine Design & Development Engineer

The Romax eDRIVE Business Unit delivers innovative ePowertrain solutions to a global customer base. You will join the Systems & Controls Group and contribute to the end-to-end development of electrical machines across a wide range of applications.

We are looking for a highly motivated, proactive, driven and enthusiastic individual to join our Systems and Controls team, based in Nottingham, UK. The Systems and Controls team also has a presence in Romax’s UK Sheffield office, based on the University of Sheffield campus. The link between Romax and Sheffield University provides opportunities to access and collaborate with world leading academics in ongoing and future projects.

You will be responsible for tasks across the complete product development lifecycle; from requirements capture and management through to system integration, verification and validation. You will provide technical leadership and help deliver projects and technical proposals. You will have customer facing responsibilities, managing interactions with both internal and external stakeholders and will contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and practices. This role requires occasional travel, including travel to the Sheffield office.

Competencies and Experience:

As an Electrical Machine Design & Development Engineer, you will need to demonstrate the following competences/experience:

  • Experience in Electrical Machine concept development, including the definition of clear and comprehensive requirements, interface definition and system and component sizing to meet application demands.
  • Strong background in Electrical Machine design using 2D/3D electro-magnetic Finite Element Analysis, ideally for automotive, off-highway or motorsport applications.
  • Experience in Electrical Machine cooling system design.
  • Familiar with noise and vibration analysis and optimisation.
  • Experience of commissioning prototype systems, including characterisation, fault finding, diagnostics and design verification.
  • Familiar with the use of HIL and other rapid-prototype control systems.
  • Experience of control systems validation and calibration on test rigs, dynos and prototype vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks, including CAN.
  • Proficient in Matlab/Simulink.
  • Experienced user of electro-magnetic and mechanical Finite Element Analysis packages, such as Ansys Maxwell.
  • Familiar with functional safety requirements and the ISO26262 standards.
  • Knowledge of commercially available calibration and measurement tools would be advantageous.
  • Experience in working on both sides of the development V-cycle.
  • An appreciation of Systems Engineering principles.
  • Experience in developing electric drive systems for hybrid or fully-electric vehicles would be preferable.
  • Knowledge of electrified powertrain fundamentals would be an advantage, such as power electronics, battery, transmission, etc.
  • First class degree or upper 2nd in a relevant Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)
