Senior Design Checker

OVERVIEW: 

Experienced Design Checker is responsible for the support of multiple programs across defense, mobility and motorsports, using skills and expertise to examine complex and detailed engineering drawings and related documents. The Design Checker is responsible to ensure conformity to Pratt Miller internal and industry standards and communicating published design standards to designers and design engineers and resolving discrepancies. The position will involve collaboration with multiple disciplines and require strong technical communication with designers, leads and management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & SKILLS:

Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Drawing Checking
    • Perform all functions associated with the drawing checking process which includes but is not limited to completeness, clarity, dimensional accuracy, simplicity in design and efficiency.
    • Marking of engineering drawing defects and communicating to designers as well as suggesting methods of improvement.
    • Knowledge of engineering principles and manufacturing processes and capabilities in a prototype and production environment.
    • Knowledge of machined, sheet metal, and additive manufactured part fabrication
    • Ability to communicate design, drafting and modeling methods to instruct and mentor.
  • Standards verification and compliance
    • Review and assist in the development, application and compliance to Pratt Miller internal standards.
    • Demonstrate through knowledge and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and capable of checking GD&T callouts on drawings per ASME Y 14.5-2009.
    • Demonstrate through knowledge and application of checking drawings per ASME Y14.100-2014.
    • Apply relevant ASME Y14 standards to drawing checking per customer requirements.
    • Knowledge and application of appropriate Quality Standards.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 10yrs design engineering employment experience
  • Prior Design Checking experience
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (WindChill)
  • Experience in parametric 3D modeling (Creo, NX and/or Catia) and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
  • Strong technical writing, communication, team, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint)

DESIRED SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • ASME GDTP (Y14.5) certification
  • BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive Engineering, or equivalent
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to support technicians and shop builds as required

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • 8am-4pm core (minimum) work hours (typically 45hrs per week average)
  • Project surge support and additional effort as needed to achieve deadlines

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Work will typically be performed in a team-based office environment. Our team members work on collaborative, challenging projects that offer the opportunity to learn from a wide range of expertise and have fun in the process. Some travel may be required for customer and supplier meetings, off-site training, off-site testing, and attendance at industry conferences.

This position will require lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information and employees in this role will need to meet those requirements. Requirements include US Citizenship, US Permanent Resident or ability to meet licensure requirements.
